Psychological Noise In Consecutive Interpretation And Noise-abating Strategies

Due to its complexity in social-cultural and cognitive-psychological terms,scholars have tended to approach interdisciplinarity as a trend in interpreting studies.The communicative approach to translation studies is a prime example.This thesis essays to explain psychological noises in consecutive interpreting from the perspective of communication theories.The nature of interpreting is to convey messages.However,the process of decoding by the interpreter is disrupted by multiple factors,which are defined as "noises" in communication theories.The research questions of this thesis are:do psychological noises exist in consecutive interpreting?How many categories do psychological noises fall into?Which kind of noise may have the most effect on interpreters?What strategies are available to abate psychological noises?The author of this thesis would first study literature on communication,cognitive psychology,sociology and translation in an effort to apply concepts of psychological noises in interpreting studies.The author would define and categorize psychological noises in consecutive interpreting.Second,a survey and interview would be conducted among both veteran and entry-level interpreters to identify the prevalence and effect of psychological noises.Through the author's research,psychological noises are prevalent in real interpreting scenarios,which is especially true for entry-level interpreters and interpreter trainees.The author divides psychological noises into three types,namely presuppositional noise,emotional intelligence noise,and anxiety.The survey shows that anxiety is among the most prominent and prevalent,followed by emotional intelligence noise and presuppositional noise.The author also attempts to propose coping strategies that may prepare interpreters in the long run and help them abate noises before,during and after interpreting tasks.For example,interpreters should prioritize context over his own presupposition and better prepare themselves psychologically.This thesis offers an insight into psychological noises in interpreting studies.The previous researches,however,mainly shed light on semantic and intercultural noises with little focus on psychological noises,which are narrowly defined as anxiety.This thesis approaches psychological noises in consecutive interpretation with the author's interdisciplinary efforts.The author constructs a communicative model of interpreting disrupted by psychological noises,and proposes noise-abating strategies,which is of both theoretical and practical significance.
