In order to attract more overseas students or scholars and encourage international communication,China has deepened its cooperation with foreign colleges and universities.Nowadays, the internet has become an important channel for foreign students and scholars to acquire knowledge about Chinese universities.More and more universities in Fujian Province have translated their home pages into English in response to the program of ’New Maritime Silk Road University Alliance’.In the university website profiles,’About the University’ section plays an important part in providing information and projecting a good image. But the quality of their English versions remains to be improved. The author of this thesis chooses 25 examples of ’About the University’ section, respectively from bi-lingual websites in Fujian Province and the American websites,as a small corpus for her research. The target readers of English versions of ’About the University’ section have different social cultural backgrounds from that of the Chinese versions. Therefore, the translators should try to achieve multi-level equivalence and make the English version conform to the target readers’ expectation.First, this thesis focuses the translation errors in the ’About the university’ section in Fujian universities website profiles. There are many wordy and redundant phrases and Chinglish expressions. Some words are used inappropriately. Moreover, the translators have not paid enough attention to target readers and their cultures.Second, the thesis discusses the translation strategies based on American parallel texts. The author studies the text functions, contents, structures and language of Chinese texts and American ones and analyzes the major similarities and discrepancies between them. These disparities should be taken into consideration in the translation process. The author concludes that the C-E translation of university webpage profiles may imitate the structure, the expression and the overall tone of the American parallel texts. With the help of the parallel text, the translators can produce the target language text which conforms to the target readers’ expectation.Lastly, this thesis presents a translation model from the perspective of parallel text. The model helps translators to produce better translations and achieve effective communication. It can be used in the C-E translation of any applied texts. The author hopes this thesis can help reduce potential adverse effects for universities in Fujian Province in projecting their images to foreign readers.
