As a common linguistic device, metaphor has always caught the attention of the academia. To date, metaphor has 'already become a comprehensive and interdisciplinary research field.Metaphor is no longer regarded simply as a rhetorical device, but as an important mode of human cognition.Metaphor research is no longer confined to the lexical level, but extends to a larger and higher level.Unlike the study of metaphor, research on metaphor translation has been largely neglected until 1976 when Menachim Dagut published an essay entitled "Can 'Metaphor' be translated?".And then Newmark devoted a chapter of his book Approaches to Translation to the issue "The translation of metaphor"in 1981.The principles for classifying metaphor and the strategies for translating metaphor he put forward in the book have great significance. This thesis first introduces the translation project:translations from page 131 to 162 in Deborah Levy's new novel Hot Milk which was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2016.Secondly,in chronological order, the metaphorical research are reviewed from the perspective of traditional rhetoric to the perspective of cognitive linguistics. Then,Newmark's principles for classifying metaphor and the strategies for translating metaphor are briefly introduced.Metaphorical examples in the translation project are analyzed afterwards according to these principles and strategies.Through case analysis, the author finds that Newmark's metaphor classification principle and translation strategies can be used as a guide that largely guarantees accuracy in the translation of metaphors.
