Analyses Of Translations Of Metaphor In Fortress Besieged From The Aspect Of Newmark’s Translation Methods On Metaphor

Metaphor is a universal linguistic phenomenon and our verbal communication can’t go smoothly without metaphor which enriches our cognition as well as our language.We are able to understand and use the metaphors in our native language freely,but how to translate metaphor of our native language skillfully into other languages and help people from other cultures understand our metaphor properly so as to avoid the possible misunderstandings in cross-cultural communication is still a problem.With the deepening of study on metaphor,many theories and concrete strategies about the translation of metaphor have been proposed.Among them,the seven translation methods of metaphor suggested by the English translator Newmark(1 Reproducing the same image in the target language 2 Replace the image in the source language with a standard target language image 3 Translation of metaphor by simile 4 Translation of metaphor or simile by simile plus sense 5 Conversion of metaphor to sense 6 Deletions 7 Same metaphor combined with sense)and the five specific translation methods proposed by the Chinese scholar Ke Ping(literal translation,domestication method,simile translation,literal translation with annotation,summary or interpretation)are widely used.Based on the seven translation methods of metaphor by Newmark and taking metaphor translations from Fortress Besieged as examples,our research aims at exploring the problems in metaphor translation.The study found:1)the classification and characteristics of metaphor in Fortress Besieged.Through the analysis of the typical translation of metaphor,the author analyses the meaning and feature of the metaphors to help potential readers to gain better understanding;2)the highlight of metaphor translation in Fortress Besieged,From the perspective of Newmark’s translation methods of metaphor,the author probes into the suitable translation of metaphor from Fortress Besieged,and tries to master the methods of metaphor translation;3)the shortcomings of metaphor translation in Fortress Besieged.Based on the analysis of the translation of metaphors in Fortress Besieged,the author discusses the problems and deficiencies in some translations from the perspective of Peter Newmark’s translation of metaphor,and offers her own suggestions.Based on our own comprehension of metaphors,this study aims at analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of metaphor translation in Fortress Besieged in the view of Newark’s translation methods,and offering suggestions for other metaphor translation to promote the cross-cultural communications through the analyses of the outstanding translations and the mortification of the problematic translations.
