Compensation In Religious Writings Under Skopos Theory

Ideal translation is expected to bring target readers the same reading experience as the source language readers.However,translation loss and cultural default are unavoidable due to differences in language,culture and background,thus degrading reader's reading experience more or less.To guarantee the reading quality of target readers to the greatest extent,it is necessary to bring in compensation strategies.This paper tends to discuss how to reproduce the style of the original text through compensation strategies under the guidance of Skopos Theory,the source text in which is extracted from the second chapter of the book The Buddha in Daily Life.A large number of Buddhist terms and religious allusions are included in the original one,the content of which involves astronomy,quantum mechanics,and nuclear physics.Besides,an array of personages all over the world are quoted,adding the text rich literary color.Therefore,loss is inevitable during the process of translation,and to minimize such losses entails the use of compensation strategies.Firstly,the report reviews the research findings made by scholars at home and abroad,which covers the interpretations and introductions to compensation strategies,the principles of compensation as well as its application strategies.Secondly,it discusses and analyses loss and corresponding compensation strategies in striking instances cited from the source text.It is then made clear that compensation exerts a powerful role in making up for the loss of cultural images and background information in the process of translating texts,especially religious writings,in three fields:lexical level,communicative level and aesthetic level.In practice,the author finds that translation compensation at the aesthetic level is of particular importance,including the compensation of aesthetic forms and values.In addition,the author analyzes the specific application of different compensation methods and makes in-depth analysis in combination with representative examples.
