famous Italian missionary and Sinologist in early times, had written The Conquest of the Great and most renowned Empire of China which was an important Chinese historical work based on cross-cultural perspective. We can see the transition from the Ming Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty of China through the views of Martino Martini,a 17th-century Jesuit missionary. The thesis applied the sociology of literature put forward by Robert Escarpit to the study of The Conquest of the Great and most renowned Empire of China written by Martino Martini. The sociology of literature proposed that the complete dissemination circuit of a work included the production, transmission, and consumption. The very dissemination model is helpful for us to study the influence of The Conquest of the Great and most renowned Empire of China on British society more objectively. The influence-oriented approach made us understand relations among literary works from different countries and in different eras. And we focus on the works affected by The Conquest of the Great and most renowned Empire of China. Then we compare the English version of The Conquest of the Great and most renowned Empire of China with English drama,The Conquest of China by the Tartars, which was adapted from The Conquest of the Great and most renowned Empire of China.it is useful to analyze the literary influence of the work from the perspective of sociology,so that we can acquire a more comprehensive and fair cognition. In the first Chapter, the writer made a review about the current research status of Martino Martini and The Conquest of the Great and most renowned Empire of China,as well as the related studies and theses about the literary relation between Chinese and English in the modern times. In the second chapter, the writer introduced the life and academic achievements of Martino Martini. And the writer reviewed the background of this work and its influence on the western world through sorting out the editions of the works that have been published in European countries in the 17th century.Besides, the thesis mainly focused on the analysis of the content of English translation,it also focused on its impact on British theatre in the 17th century, which helps us understand the relationship between China and England and realize the British imagination about China. This thesis has compared, from the angle of influence, the English version of The Conquest of the Great and most renowned Empire of China with English drama,The Conquest of China by the Tartars, which was adapted from The Conquest of the Great and most renowned Empire of China. We have directly understood the influence of the very work by analyzing it through three angles, namely social structure, literary structure, and psychological structure.Concerned the social structure,Martino Martini must output the concept of the change of China’s Ming dynasty and Qing dynasty. While Settle didn’t have to.He just need to adopt the script based on the social structure written by Martini.Concerned the literature structure,Martini described the history of China’s Ming dynasty and Qing dynasty through the medium of literature. He made the historyfictionalized and shaped all kinds of characters. The literary character of The Conquest of China by the Tartars was more prominent. The play revolved around the two love lines of the four protagonists and the wars between the two countries, which are intertwined with each other.Concerned the psychological structure,as a western missionary,Martini wrote China’s history of Ming dynasty and Qing dynasty naturally through Christian theological perspective. He also paid special attention to the condition of Jesuit and Chinese Christians in China.Settle wrote the script based entirely on the material from The Conquest of the Great and most renowned Empire of China. And he added theme of love and revenge to the theme of the war.He combined the western love story with China’s war to construct a new China’s story with the western aesthetic taste. With Martino Martini’s The Conquest of the Great and most renowned Empire of China as its target, the thesis has specifically analyzed and compared the English version of the book through referring to different versions, analyzing its texts and exploring its influence. The academic meanings are as follow:firstly, the thesismakes a summary of the version and text.and expanded the scope of the study of The Conquest of the Great and most renowned Empire of Chinathrough multidimensionalresearch.Besides, the thesis has explored the influence of the English version of The Conquest of the Great and most renowned Empire of China on 17th century British literature.Due to this,we can reproduce part of the history of China-Britain cultural exchanges.Furthermore, the method of comparative study is innovative, since there had not been a comparative study of the specific texts of this two works.Otherwise, since it is a classic work of sinology in the West, detailed study and analysis of the book can not only help us better understand the communication among early Christian Sinologists and China, but also help us review the development of Sinology. | | Keywords/Search Tags: | Martino Martini, The Conquest of the Great and most renowned Empire of China, The Conquest of China by the Tartars, influence study | | Related
