| Loss in translation is unavoidable.Due to the huge language and culture differences between the West and China,loss in information,meaning,pragmatic functions,cultures,and aesthetic forms,in the process of translating is prominent.Therefore,compensation is necessary.This thesis is a case study of compensation strategies applied in the translation of an academic text.The translated text Consciousness and the Brain is on consciousness science.It has distinct levels,clear logic,and complicated sentence patterns.If translated literally,the original information,meaning,and pragmatic functions would suffer huge losses.Therefore,in the process of translating,the translator sums up the potential losses,applies corresponding compensation strategies,and explores the application of translation compensation strategies to academic texts.Many scholars in China and the West have studied translation compensation,and the compensation strategies they proposed have both similarities and differences.This thesis chooses five main strategies that are appropriate for analyzing this text:paraphrase,contextual amplification,combination,division,and meaning extension.Paraphrase is to explain the meaning in the context directly to target readers;amplification is to present the meaning that is obvious to original readers but not to target readers;combination refers to translating the meaning of two or more words into one or combine two or more simple or compound sentences into one sentence while division refers to abstracting one or more word,phrase,or clause and making them an independent sentence or repeating them to collocate with other components;extension refers to adjusting or modifying the meaning of certain words in the original texts based on context or expressing habits of the target language,while preserving its original semantics.The four strategies are of great help to tackle the difficulties in the translating process. |
