On September 3,2015,China hosted a series of activities to commemorate the 70 th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’ War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-fascism War.The War,like a mirror,can enable people to cherish the peace.In order to make the WWII understood by more people,the author chose The Slaves of Solitude,a war novel,to translate.Patrick Hamilton,the author of the novel,is a novelist as well as a playwright,who is praised by Doris Lessing as “a marvelous novelist who’s grossly neglected”.The novel consists of 29 chapters,from which,the author chose the first and part of the second part as translation material.Numerous English rhetorical devices are applied in the novel.To thoroughly understand English rhetorical devices and translate them into Chinese ones is of great difficulty the author met in the whole process of translation.Chen Wangdao,the founder of Chinese modern rhetorical theory,put forward the classification and the standard of Chinese rhetorical theory.Guided by his rhetorical theory and the standard of situation and theme,the author tried to translate English devices in the novel into Chinese ones to maintain the expressive force of language.This translation report comprises six parts.The first part describes the translation task including the background、the reason and the significance.The second part describes each process of the translation.The third part is the literature review and the fourth part introduces Chen Wangdao’s rhetorical theory.The fifth part is the analysis of the translation cases guided by his rhetorical theory and the last part is the general conclusion after translation.Translation and rhetoric are closely related with each other,therefore,the translator needs constantly improve his/her rhetorical consciousness and abilities,for the further study of the translational rhetoric and more translation of literature works set in the War.
