English Fiction Translation From The Perspective Of Communicative Translation Theory

This is a translation report based on the translation of chapter10-12 from English popular novel War Brides.War Brides mainly tells a story about five young and brave women who actively participate in the resistance movement against Nazi German's invasion during the World War II.Its various and varied characters,intricate plot and vivid language make the novel No.1 Amazon Kindle best seller in 2013.Characters' distinctiveness is mainly manifested through their utterances.And characters with different identities and personalities have varied linguistic styles,so the translator should pay close attention to the linguistic distinctiveness of charterers.Moreover,the vividness of the language also results from the frequent use of figures of speech,such as simile,metaphor,repetition etc.Thus it is important to produce the special effects of the source text in the target text.In addition,the complex plot with various characters in complicated relationships if translated literally without care may cause difficulties in Chinese readers' comprehension.Therefore,the differences in reference due to the different thinking modes,syntactic structures and culture between English and Chinese should be dealt with carefully so that the reference in the target text can be clarified and easily understood.Communicative translation theory,which stresses on the readers' comprehension and reaction,requires the translator to produce on its readers an effect as close as possible to that obtained on the readers of source and help readers eliminate difficulties and obstacles in the process of reading and communication.Based on the features of the selected text and translation difficulties,this report will further explain the translation methods employed to achieve the "effect" that communicative translation theory emphasizes on with case analysis method.For the translation of linguistic distinctiveness of characters in the source text,the methods such as idiomatic translation,addition,variation translation are applied to make the varied characters' languages in accordance with their different identities and personalities so as to reproduce the vivid images of the source text.For the translation of figures of speech,based on the transmission of the information in the source text,the paper writer uses translation methods of changes of metaphor objects,addition,replacement with synonyms to make the translation conform with Chinese culture,and convey the emotion of original text.For the translation of reference in the narration,based on the accurate understanding of the source meaning,the methods of omission,prons' reduction and embodiment are employed.As a result,the target text will meet with Chinese readers' reading habits,comprehension and expectation.
