There is a close relationship between language and culture.First, language is one of the most important parts in culture. From the broad sense, the ways of people's material life and intellectual life belong to culture. From the narrow sense, culture is a kind of spirit product, which is produced and developed by daily practice.Besides, language is a carrier of culture,so it spreads culture.Culture differs from nation to nation. For example, the dialect can stand for the particular area.At the same time, culture has a great influence on language, and it also restricts the way of using language to some degree.Language can not split off from culture, and culture has a broad influence on language, too. In the learning process of English reading in junior high school, learning culture sometimes means learning culture as well.If we carry cultural teaching and impart related cultural knowledge to students, ask students to read English materials with the help of the background information,we can assert that English reading will be more effective. At present,English reading teaching methods of junior high school in our country is not very effective, and some of junior high school students which can not get good grades in English reading texts, and they attribute their failure to the lack of English vocabulary.Besides, some teachers believe that if students master the meanings of every word, phrase, sentence, surely they will understand the whole essay,so they insure that the grasp of lots of words and grammar is the most important way to get good grades in English reading. So for a long time English reading teaching pays much attention to stressing the forms of language(for example: pronunciation?word?phrase and grammar),but the attention put to cultural teaching is not enough. This research aims to study whether cultural teaching can improve students' attention to English reading andstudents' English reading scores. The research employs questionnaire surveys and reading tests as instruments. The students of two classes are selected from Xin Dian Middle School, and the total number is 70.Class one is the experimental class, which has 35 students, and class two is as the controlled class, which has 35 students.According to the reading results of pretests, the means of two classes are 13.66 and 13.71,from which we know that English reading level of two classes is almost the same.During the three months' research time, the controlled class uses the traditional teaching method to start English reading teaching, while the experimental class uses the cultural teaching method to teach reading. The cultural teaching in English reading mainly involves three aspects: custom, conduct and values. Before and after the research,we have questionnaire surveys and reading tests, and also have statistical data and analysis. The research results reveal that cultural teaching can make junior high school students get more interested in English reading. The pretests and post-tests show that the means of two classes are 14.00 and 16.51,from which we discover that students' reading grades in experimental class have increased more largely than before.Comparing experimental class in itself, the results of pretests and post-tests are 13.66 and 16.51.That is to say cultural teaching can improve students' English reading grades.Based on the research, the author puts forward some suggestions from the research.Cultural teaching should create the cultural teaching atmosphere and enrich the cultural teaching contents;and teachers should help students develop initiative;last but not the least, cultural teaching is a long-term project which needs to be insisted on.As time is limited, the results of the research lack universality and needs further exploration.
