Abstract/Summary:
This is a report of the translation project. In the first part,it presents the translation of Chapter 9 Appetitive and Elimination Problems of Etiology and Assessment of Behavior Problems, the second volume of Handbook of Applied Dog Behavior and Training by Steven R.Lindsay, who is a dog behavior consultant and trainer in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania. The volume provides the theoretical and practical framework for understanding the development and treatment of dog behavior problems, and the selected chapter illustrates dogs’ appetitive and elimination problems including their etiologies and treatment. The selected chapter offers readers who care about dogs a specific and professional angle to see problems in the appetitive and elimination aspects. In the second part, the report presents the critical commentary which first introduces the source text and the significance of the project and then illustrates the theoretical guidance and strategies employed in the translation. As an informative text, the source text aims at conveying readers the intact information without reading difficulties. Therefore,Peter Newmark’s theory of communicative translation is employed as the theoretical guidance, which is proposed by Newmark for guiding the translation of informative texts.Communicative translation attempts to render the exact contextual meaning of the original to make it acceptable and comprehensible to the readership. In the report, three strategies are analyzed at the lexical level. They are conversion, omission and conversion from the negative to the affirmative.Three strategies are presented at the syntactical level. They are splitting, reforming the sentence order and converting the passive voice to the active voice. One strategy is illustrated at the textual level. It is cohesion.Hopefully, this report may provide useful suggestions to those who are interested in the translation of informative texts.
