A Study Of Tanyao

At the beginning of Emperor Wen Cheng's recovery to the Buddhism and with the orders of Emperor Wen Cheng,Tanyao,the Buddhist monk administrator,excavated the world-famous Yungang Caves at Mt.Wuzhou,which were influenced by the Buddhist cultures in the shapes of caves,carving style and performance content brought by Tanyao from Liangzhou and the Western Regions.Meanwhile,Tanyao made a great contribution to the development of Buddhism of the Northern Wei Dynasty and the spreading of Buddhist culture to the East through carrying out a series of reforms and improvement in the system of Buddhist monk officials and the temple economy and organizing the translation of fourteen new scriptures,which was the first large-scale translation activity of Buddhism in the history of the Northern Wei Dynasty.So far,the documents,records and research for the life and activities of Tanyao is very simple.This paper is aimed at a detailed analysis for Tanyao's life and activities in Liangzhou and the Northern Wei Dynasty.The thesis is divided into seven chapters.The first chapter is the introduction,in which the main reason for choosing the topic,the academic issues involved the academic history,the related research methods,the structure of the article,the significance of research and the existing problems and shortcomings are discussed.The second chapter describes the relevant documents and the record of Tanyao and Tanyao's life.And the third,fourth,fifth,and sixth chapers are the main parts of the article,which discussed in detail in Chapter Three the contribution to the structure of the caves of Yungang Grottoes,carving style and engraving content and to the Buddhism spreading to the East.The fourth chapter is about the improvement and reform of the Buddhist monk official system of Northern Wei Dynasty.The fifth chapter elaborates on the improvement of the temple economy of the Northern Wei Dynasty in the policy and content and the influence on the later generations.The sixth chapter,through a detailed analysis of Buddhist scriptures translated by Tanyao,studies the historical background of the translation of Buddhist scriptures by Tanyao and the profound meaning of Buddhism.The seventh chapter is the conclusion of the article,in which opinions and conclusions reflected in the whole paper are summarized.
