Conventionally, risk factors like age, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, smoking, obesity and diabetes are thought to be related to atherosclerosis. However,in recent years, more and more new atherosclerosis risk factors have been found out and among which,TMAO(trimethylamine oxide)has been paid much attention.According to the newly discovering,TMAO in plasma can be used to predict adverse cardiovascular events in patients, besides acute coronary syndrome(ACS).The atherogenic effect of TMAO is attributed to metabolism of cholesterol and bile acid, activation of inflammatory pathways and formation of foam cell.A number of therapeutic strategies are being explored to reduce TMAO levels, which incorporate in reducing intake of dietary precursors of TMAO,promoting the growth of bacteria that utilize TMAO as substrate and the development of target-specific molecules.Despite the accumulating evidence support that TMAO is closely associated with atherosclerosis and ACS in patients, other don't support this. This review will mainly discuss the relationship between trimethylamine oxide and atherosclerosis, which contributes to acute coronary disease.
