Objective: Traumatic fractures place a huge burden on our health-care system. Therefore detaile information about incidence, distribution, and risk factors for traumatic fractures is vital for planning and prevention. The China National Fracture Study(CNFS)is an epidemiological survey of fractures in China, which identified many risk factors for traumatic fracture. And the national epidemiological survey of fractures was conducted only on a nationwide population, but there are few studies that focus on the risk factors for traumatic fracture requiring surgical intervention. Our objective was to explore major risk factors for traumatic fracture by comparing related data of hospitalized patients with traumatic fracture and patients with lumbar disk herniations. Methods: Traumatic fracture patients and lumbar disk herniation patients who required surgical treatment in the orthopedics department of our hospital were included in this study and were divided into a traumatic fracture group and a lumbar disk herniation group.Clinical data including age, gender, ethnicity, occupation, education level, sleep duration, smoking history, drinking history, body mass index(BMI),chronic disease history, previous history of fracture, history of osteoporosis and family history of fracture of the 2 groups of patients were collected by questionnaires.Major risk factors for traumatic fracture were analyzed by using multivariate logistic regression. Results: This study was conducted between March and May 2018.A total of 410 patients were enrolled in this study, including 203 patients with traumatic fracture and 207 patients with lumbar disk herniation.Univariate analysis showed that the 2 groups of patients had statistically significant differences in family history of fracture(?~2=8.490,P=0.004),smoking history(?~2=9.511,P=0.002),drinking history(?~2=1.851,P=0.174),gender(?~2=39.937,P<0.001),sleep duration(?~2=30.052,P<0.001),chronic disease history(?~2=35.058,P<0.001),history of osteoporosis(?~2=1.721,P=0.190),age(?~2=101.605,P<0.001),BMI(?~2=11.585,P=0.009),occupation(?~2=53.530,P<0.001)and education level(?~2=16.265,P=0.001).Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that patients 25~44 years old are more prone to traumatic fracture than are patients ? 65 years old(OR=12.836);males are more prone to fracture than females(OR=4.057);drinking alcohol is a risk factor for traumatic fracture(OR=2.823);sufficient sleep duration(>7hours/night)is a protective factor for traumatic fracture(OR=0.479).Conclusions: Young age, male gender, and drinking are risk factors for traumatic fracture.Sufficient sleep duration is a protective factor for traumatic fracture.
