Objective:1.Investigate the prevalence of NCEP-ATP Ⅲ defined metabolic syndrome(MS)in Lahu people in the Lincang area of Yunnan Province through cross-sectional survey.2.Explore the influencing factors of MS and provide clinical basis for prevention and treatment of MS.3.Explore the correlation between MS and its components and diabetes mellitus(DM)in the study population. Methods:A total of 1460 participants(678 males and 782 females, with an average age of 40.89±14.16 years old)were includedin the study.Data was collected between August to September 2010,using stratified cluster random sampling method to investigate Lahu ethnic individuals aged ≥ 18 years, who lived in the local area≥5 years.Basic demographic information, lifestyle and dietary habits, economic status, physical activity were recorded.Blood samples were takenfor biochemical indicators of MS.SPSS statistical software package was used for data analysis. The measurement data is described by mean ± standard deviation, the count data rate and composition ratio are described, the t test is used to compare the mean between the two groups, and the frequency between the groups is compared using the chi-squared test. The inspection level is generally taken as 0.05(α=0.05),and P value<0.05 in the results is considered statistically significant. To further understand the relationship between test variables and the incidence of DM and MS,a binary logistic regression model was used for analysis. Results:Under the NCEP-ATP Ⅲ standard, the prevalence of MS in the Lahu ethnic group in Lincang area is 13.7%,and the prevalence of MS in women is higher than the men(17.9%VS 8.8%,P<0.01).The prevalence of MS in the define age groups are 11.1%、18.2%、16.6%respectively.The prevalence of middle-aged and elderly groups is higher compared to youth group. There was no statistically significant difference between the prevalence of middle-aged group and elderly group.2.Regression analysis of the possible influencing factors of MS found that women and middle-aged are the risk factors for the occurrence of metabolic syndrome. The risk of MS in women is 2.1 times than the men,and the risk of MS in middle-aged is 1.7 times higher than young people.Smoking status, alcohol consumption, educational level and physical activity were not associated with MS.3.The overall prevalence of diabetes in the Lahu population is 3.2%.Regression analysis of the possible influencing factors of DM found that MS is related. The risk of DM in people with MS is 5.41 times than those without MS.The number of NCEP-ATP Ⅲ MS criteria(5 in total)is associated with the risk of DM.The risk of DM meeting 2,3,4and 5 of the MS criteria is 2.3 times、5.7 times、10.2 times、58.9 times than the people with just land zero MS component respectively. The occurrence of DM is also related to specific MS criteria. For individuals meeting one MS criteria, central obesity and high TG are risk factors of diabetes, low HDL-C、high blood pressure are not related to diabetes. With two MS criteria, central obesity+hypertension/high TG/low HDL-C are risk factors of diabetes, hypertension+high TG/low HDL-C、high TG+low HDL-C are not relevant to diabetes. For three MS criteria, the combinations of any two components based on central obesity are risk factors of the development of diabetes, hypertension+high TG+low HDL-C is not related to the occurrence of diabetes. The combination of 4 components are risk factors of diabetes.Conclusion:1.The prevalence of MS in the Lahu people is 13.7%under the NCEP-ATP Ⅲ criteria.2.Female gender and middle aged are risk factors for MS in Lahu people.3.MS is related to the occurrence of DM in the Lahu people, the risk of DM increases with the number of positive MS criteria. The occurrence of DM is also related to different combination of components within the MS criteria. The combinations including central obesity are risk factors of DM.
