BackgroundEmpathy refers to the identification and understanding of the situation and emotions from the perspective of others. The development of personal empathy is affected by the congenital genetic factors and the acquired living environment, and can be strengthened and improved through acquired professional training. In clinical nursing, empathy is the essence of all nurse-patient communication and a bridge to build a good nurse-patient relationship. As the main force of current clinical nursing work, the empathy ability of junior nurses directly affects the quality of nursing work, disease treatment and patient rehabilitation, and even the development of nursing.ObjectiveBy investigating the current situation of empathy ability in junior nurses, exploring the correlation among empathy ability, general self-efficacy and clinical communication ability, and comprehensively analyzing the influencing factors of empathy ability,we can provide a basis for the cultivation of empathy ability in junior nurses.MethodBy using the method of questionnaire survey,1412 junior nurses from 7 Class-A tertiary hospitals in Northern Henan were selected as the research objects. The self-designed general information questionnaire, the Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Health Professionals(JSE-HP),General Self-Efficacy Scale(GSES)and clinical communication ability assessment scale were used as research tools.SPSS 25.0 statistical software was used to analyze the collected data.Descriptive statistical analysis,t test, analysis of variance,Pearson correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used to explore the main influencing factors of the empathy ability in junior nurses.Result1.The total scores of empathy in junior nurses were(115.06 ± 12.95).And the scores of each dimension: perspective selection were(57.69±6.95),emotional care were(40.26±6.12)and transpositional consideration were(17.11±2.98).There were significant differences in age, personality, fertility status, family structure, average monthly income, departments, whether to attend the training on empathy ability and job satisfaction among junior nurses(P < 0.05).2.The total scores of general self-efficacy in junior nurses were(27.61±4.85).The results showed that there was a positive correlation between the general self-efficacy and the empathy ability in junior nurses(r = 0.209,P < 0.01).3.The total scores of clinical communication ability in junior nurses were(88.10±10.91).The results showed that there was a positive correlation between clinical communication ability and the empathy ability in junior nurses(r=0.519,P<0.01).4.Multiple stepwise regression analysis showed that average monthly income, departments, job satisfaction and clinical communication ability were the main factors affecting the empathy ability of junior nurses, which could explain 30.8% of the total variation of empathy ability.Conclusion1.The overall level of empathy ability in junior nurses is high, but there are differences within the group, which affects the quality of clinical nursing work to some extent. And the empathy ability in junior nurses needs to be further improved.2.Different age, personality, fertility status, family structure, average monthly income, departments, whether to attend the training on empathy ability, job satisfaction and other factors affect the level of empathy ability in junior nurses.3.The stronger the general self-efficacy in junior nurses, the higher their empathy ability. The stronger the clinical communication ability in junior nurses, the higher their empathy ability.4.Average monthly income, departments, job satisfaction and clinical communication ability can predict the level of empathy ability in junior nurses.
