Objective:To analyze the serum 25(OH)D nutritional status of children with febrile seizures in Luzhou area of Sichuan Province, exploring the principle of serum 25(OH)D in children with febrile seizures with their gender, ages and the seasons respectively.Aimed to provide reference for preventing children from febrile seizures by vitamin D supplementationMethods:During the period of 2015.1.1-2018.7.31,serum total calcium, serum 25(OH)D,hemoglobin value of 167 hospitalized children with febrile seizures were collected and analyzed. The level of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D[25(OH)D]were evaluated for its correlations with children's gender, age and the local temperature in different season.Results:1)The average serum 25(OH)D value of 167 children with febrile seizures was 29.37 ng/mL,in which 74 cases(44.31%)were normal,62 cases(37.13%)were sub-clinically deficient, and 31 cases(18.52%)were deficient.2)Serum 25(OH)D levels in children with febrile seizures decreased with ages, and the 25(OH)D values of each age were significantly decreased comparing to those of healthy controls. There was no deficiency found in serum total calcium and hemoglobin samples of all children with febrile seizures.3)The most popular febrile seizure incidence is in January(35 cases,20.96%).1-2 years old toddlers contributed most(72 ca ses,44.91%),and boys are significantly more than girls(1.73:1)in febrile seizure cases.4)Serum 25(OH)D levels of children with febrile seizures in the region decreased in winter and summer[(27.47?30.37)ng/mL],increased in spring and autumn[(31.58?35.13)ng/mL].There was statistically significant about serum 25(OH)D levels difference between winter and spring as well as autumn.5)Serum 25(OH)D values in children with febrile seizures are inversely proportional to the high temperature in summer.25(OH)D showed a downward trend when the summer temperature exceeded 35 degrees Celsius. The optimum temperature for children in this area to absorb vitamin D by skin sun-irradiated is 25-35?Conclusion:Vitamin D deficiency in childhood remains a global public health problem. Our study shows that 55.68%of febrile seizures children in Luzhou area with the serum 25(OH)D deficiency. The occurrence of febrile seizures in children of all ages was closely related to the deficiency of vitamin D.There is much more possibility for 2-year-old boy attacked by febrile seizures in January of each year.In the face of a large number of children's lack of vitamin D,pediatricians should take the examination of vitamin D as a routine item Vitamin D acts as a kind of sterol hormone, which is involved in nearly 3%of human genome regulation and plays a wide range of biological effects.Vitamin D is related to immune system and nervous system. It is found that vitamin D deficiency can lead to the decrease of cellular immunity and humoral immunity Children with low immune systems are more susceptible to infection, especially in January when is still at the end of winter and also the beginning of spring. At that time various respiratory diseases occure.Vitamin D supplementation plays an important role in increasing immune level, reducing infection and stabilizing nerve function.Children need enough vitamin D to prevent febrile seizures. In addition to winter, summer is the advised season to supply vitamin D for children(especially children over 2 years old),especial in those high temperature period when outdoor activities are reduced.Serum 25(OH)D level beyond than 30 ng/mL maybe a promising method to prevent febrile seizures in children. At the same time, according to the requirements of three-level prevention,Vitamin D should be added to the newborn after birth;the mother who breast their baby should supplement sufficient vitamin D during lactation;Pregnant women should also take vitamin D.
