ObjectiveTo observe the clinical effectiveness of acupuncture combined with biofeedback therapy in the treatment of functional fecal incontinence, and analyze the factors affecting the efficacy.Materials and MethodsThe clinical data of 122 patients with fecal incontinence collected from the pelvic floor disease center of Nanjing Hospital of traditional Chinese Medicine Affiliated to Nanjing University of Chinese medicine from January 2011 to February 2019 were analyzed retrospectively. The functional fecal incontinence patients who received acupuncture combined with biofeedback treatment and had complete medical records were selected. The standardized follow-up of patients were carried out by telephone, mainly through the Cleveland fecal incontinence severity score(CCF-FIS),fecal incontinence quality of life scale(FIQOL),the improvement percentage of patients’ conscious symptoms, etc.to evaluate the efficacy of patients at the end of treatment and follow-up,and analyze the factors affecting the efficacy.Results1.63 patients with functional fecal incontinence met the inclusion criteria. At the end of treatment, the CCF-FIS score(10.2± 3.9VS3.8 ± 3.7)and FIQOL score(70.2±19.5VS84.9 ±20.1)were significantly better than those before treatment(P<0.01).At the end of treatment,22 cases(34.9%)were cured,8 cases(14.3%)were effective,28 cases(44.4%)were effective and 5 cases(7.9%)were ineffective. The total effective rate at the end of treatment was 92.1%.2.Among the 63 patients with functional fecal incontinence,56 patients(88.9%)received effective follow-up,with a follow-up period of 3 months to 6.3 years(median follow-up of 35 months);the CCF-FIS scores of 56 patients with functional fecal incontinence were 10.6 ± 3.9,4.0 ± 3.9 and 4.4 ± 4.3(P<0.01).The FIQOL scores of 56 patients were 69.1 ± 19.2,83.6 ± 20.6,91.1±21.1(P<0.01).During the follow-up of 56 patients with functional fecal incontinence,14(25.0%)were cured,9(16.1%)were effective,24(42.9%)were effective,9(16.1%)were ineffective, and the total effective rate was 83.9%.31 patients(69.4%)thought that the incontinence improved by 50%or more than before treatment.3.The therapeutic effect of acupuncture combined with biofeedback in the treatment of functional fecal incontinence was related to the CCF-FIS score and the course of disease before treatment(P<0.05),but not to the sex,age and BMI of the patients(P>0.05).Conlusion1.Acupuncture combined with biofeedback treatment of functional fecal incontinence has a satisfactory clinical effect, which can significantly reduce the frequency of incontinence, improve the quality of life, and the effect is lasting.2.Acupuncture combined with biofeedback therapy is economical and safe, and the subjective efficacy evaluation of patients is satisfactory.3.The severity of symptoms and the course of disease affect the therapeutic effect.
