Objective: To explore the feasibility and safety of traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)in treating age-related macular degeneration(AMD).Methods:For those who meet the criteria 60 Dry AMD patients(98 eyes)were randomly divided into 2 groups,30 patients(50 eyes)in treatment group and 30 patients(48 eyes)in control group. The Control Group was followed up at regular intervals without targeted treatment. In the treatment group,Zhibai Dihuang decoction was taken orally for 30 days for one course, and three courses were taken at the interval of 10-15 days, and the observation time was 1 year.the visual acuity,TCM Syndrome score, macular OCT and Fundus photography were recorded at t0,t1,t3,t6 and t12,and analyzed statistically. Results: The final number of cases was 60(98 eyes),30(50 eyes)in treatment group and30(48 eyes)in control group.(1)baseline data analysis: Before treatment, there was no difference between the two groups in sex, age, course of disease, visual acuity,Tcm Syndrome score and objective index(p>0.05).(2)Visual Acuity::The visual acuity of the patients in the treatment group was improved at the time of T1,T3,T6 and T12,the difference was statistically significant(p < 0.001),the total effective rate was 86.7%;but the visual acuity of the patients in the control group was not statistically significant(p > 0.05).(3)TCM Syndrome curative effect:After treatment, the symptoms of the patients were improved, such as distortion of vision, soreness of waist and knees, blurred vision, shadow before eyes, dizziness,Tinnitus, thirsty throat, red face,five-upset heat, insomnia and dreaminess, the difference was statistically significant(p<0.05),the total effective rate was90.0%.(4)Macula OCT,Fundus photography: The results showed no new lesions except the original lesions.(5)safety: In the course of observation of 30 patients, there were 0 adverse reactions and the incidence rate was 0.It can be considered that the therapeutic drugs used in this group are safe.Conclusion:1.Oral Administration of Traditional Chinese medicine can improve visual acuity and Yin deficiency symptoms in dry AMD patients.2.In effective cases,no additional lesions have been found, which may halt or delay the progression of age-related macular degeneration.3.Traditional Chinese medicine has good safety and feasibility in treating the disease.
