Objective:To explore the effect of neuroticism on insomnia of college students, and to investigate the mediating mechanism of rumination and self-control between neuroticism and insomnia of college students. Methods:A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 767 college students in a university in sichuan province, the Chinese Big Five Personality Inventory Brief 15-item Version(CBF-PI-15),Insomnia Severity Index(ISI),Ruminative Responses Scale(RRS)and Self-Control Scale(SCS)was used. The statistical analysis was performed using SPSS21.0.AMOS24.0 was used to establish the model, and Bootstrap method was used to test the mediation effect. Results:The prevalence of insomnia in college students was 36.6%,among which the prevalence of insomnia in male and female students was 39.5%and35.4%respectively,the difference was not statistically significant(?~2=1.170,P>0.05).The prevalence of insomnia was 33.3%,39.0%,37.6%and 35.8%,respectively,among freshmen and seniors(including seniors),with no significant difference(?~2=1.386,P>0.05).The prevalence of insomnia in singleton and non-singleton children was 36.5%and 36.7%,and the difference was not statistically significant(?~2=0.006,P>0.05).Neuroticism showed a significant positive correlation with rumination and scores of all dimensions(r=0.333~0.399,P<0.001),a significant negative correlation with the total score of self-control and scores of all dimensions(r=-0.453~-0.258,P<0.001),and a significant positive correlation with the total score of ISI(r=0.285,P<0.001);The total score of rumination and the scores of each dimension showed a significant positive correlation with insomnia(r=0.251~0.281,P<0.001),and a significant negative correlation with the total score of self-control,impulse control, healthy habits, concentration on work and abstinence from entertainment(r=-0.214~-0.085,P<0.05),but no significant correlation with resisting temptation(P>0.05).Brooding was significantly negatively correlated with the total score of self-control and the scores of each dimension(r=-0.217~-0.105,P<0.01),reflective pondering was significantly negatively correlated with the total score of self-control,impulse control, concentration on work and restraint in entertainment(r=-0.148~-0.073,P<0.05),and was not significantly correlated with healthy habits and resistance to temptation(P>0.05).The total score of self-control and scores of each dimension were significantly negatively correlated with the total score of ISI(r=0.236~0.097,P<0.01).Linear regression analysis was conducted with neuroticism as the independent variable and insomnia as the dependent variable, the results showed that?=0.285,R~2=0.081,F=67.445,P<0.001.Multiple linear regression analysis was conducted with the dimensions of ruminant thinking as the independent variable and insomnia as the dependent variable. Finally, the independent variable entered into the regression equation model was forced thinking(?=0.279,R~2=0.078,F=64.409,P<0.001).Multiple linear regression analysis was conducted with each dimension of self-control as the independent variable and insomnia as the dependent variable. The independent variables included in the regression equation model were impulse control, focus on work and control over entertainment, which were-0.106,-0.121,-0.097,R~2=0.060,F=17.413,P<0.001.The structural equation model was established with neuroticism as the independent variable(X),self-control as the mediating variable 1(M1),rumination as the mediating variable 2(M2),insomnia as the dependent variable(Y),and the model fitting index was:?2/df=4.896,GFI=0.940,AGFI=0.911,CFI=0.933,RMSEA=0.071,each fitting index was good. The estimated value of the total indirect effect in the two-mediator model was 0.076[95%CI(0.052~0.103)],and the 95%confidence interval did not include 0.In the pathway from neuroticism to ruminant thinking to insomnia, the effect value was 0.037[95%CI(0.022~0.055)],and the 95%confidence interval did not include 0.In the pathway from neuroticism to self-control to insomnia, the effect value was 0.039[95%CI(0.020~0.060)],and the95%confidence interval did not include 0.There was no significant difference in the indirect effect between the two pathways(P>0.05).Conclusion:The prevalence of insomnia in college students is significantly higher than that of the general population in China, but gender, grade and whether singleton have no significant influence on the prevalence and severity of insomnia. There was a positive correlation between neuroticism, rumination and insomnia, and a negative correlation between self-control and insomnia.Neuroticism can directly affect the insomnia of college students, and indirectly through the mediating effect of rumination and self-control.
