Neuroticism is one of the most typical temperament traits, which can be described as a mental predisposition to experience negative emotions.Although the definition of neuroticism does not necessarily include processes such as worry, redundancy,or emotional avoidance, most of these traits could be found in individuals with high neuroticism.Previous studies have shown that neuroticism has predictive value on human physical and mental health. Therefore, neuroticism is central to personality research. In fact, whether some general mechanism of neuroticism exists to induce distinct psychiatric symptoms under stressful conditions, and whether neuroticism is associated with other traits that contribute to emotion and health.More importantly, some recent studies suggested that there might be heterogeneity in the relationship between neuroticism and mortality, sparkling a scientific discussion on the concept of "healthy neuroticism".The central point of this new concept is whether neuroticism can have two distinct trends that affect health. Some studies suggested that this turning point may be related to the anxiety traits of neuroticism. To better understanding the relationship between neuroticism and mental health, this dissertation conducted respectively various analyses. Some key findings were summarized as follows:1.We found that the interaction between neuroticism and stress could significantly predict specific anxiety symptoms, but not specific depression symptoms;2.We explored the tripartite relationship between neuroticism(harm avoidance),brain, and hostility, and found that the FA value of cingulate tract mediated the relationship between neuroticism and introversion combined temperament and hostility;3.It was found that the "health factors" of neuroticism extracted from the bifactor model had a protective effect on mental health;4.Multimodal neuroimaging analysis showed that neuroticism "health factor" was related to the primary cortex and network of the brain. The results of this dissertation will be helpful to better understand the function and neural mechanism of neuroticism and to improve the health of the high neurotic population. At the same time, the study has a certain enlightening effect on improving the screening ability of high-risk psychological populations and improving public services.
