ObjectivesThis study was conducted to evaluate the impact of total nutrition powder on the nutritional status,muscle strength,sports function,body composition and quality of life in the elderly with malnutrition or malnutrition risk(hereinafter referred to as malnutrition or risk)in the community,and to provide scientific basis for improving the malnutrition status in the elderly and actively coping with the challenges of healthy aging.MethodsThis study was a single arm intervention experiment,taking the preintervention indicators of the subjects as the control,and comparing with the indicators difference before and after the intervention.During April 2017 to November 2017,the elderly aged 60 and above with no malignant diseases affecting the trial were recruited from four communities in Beijing after nutrition risk screening.A total of 160 subjects with malnutrition or risk who signed the informed consent and were willing to participate in the experiment were given total nutrition powder intervention experiment for 12 weeks.During the experiment,all the subjects in the intervention group were given 53.8 g per dose of all nutrients powder dry prefabrication agent produced by Abbott every day,twice a day(morning and evening each).During the whole intervention period,all the subjects kept their usual diet and living habits,and were followed up three times after 1 month,2 months and 3 months respectively.At the beginning and the end of the experiment,the following data were collected such as the dietary intake(investigated by 24-hour recall),nutritional status(body weight,body mass index,calf circumference,micronutrient evaluation),muscle strength(grip strength),exercise function(6-meter pace),body composition(body composition analysis with body instrument)and quality of life(The MOS Item Short Form Health Survey).Quantitative data and categorical data were described by means ±standard deviation and frequency(proportion),respectively.The paired sample t-test,two independent samples t-test and chi square test were used for statistical analysis.SPSS 25.0 was used to analyze all the data,and the test level ?=0.05,two-sided test.Results1)Nutritional status:The results showed that the body weight of the subjects before and after the intervention was 56.68±8.23 kg and 57.03±8.31 kg respectively.the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).The body mass index before and after the intervention was 22.02±2.08 kg/m2 and 22.16±2.13 kg/m2 respectively,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).The calf circumference before and after the intervention was 33.80±2.53 cm and 34.21±2.53 cm,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.001).The MNA-SF scores before and after the intervention was 10.48±0.99 and 12.61 ±1.43,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).2)Muscle strength,motor function and body composition:The grip strength before and after the intervention was 23.27±7.74 kg and 24.54±8.05 kg respectively,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.001).The 6-meter walking speed before and after the intervention was 0.96±0.28 m/s and 1.11±0.33 m/s respectively,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.001).The extracellular water before and after the intervention was 11.61 ± 1.99 L and 11.53±2.00 L,body fat 16.46±4.23 kg and 16.87±4.36 kg,body fat rate 28.98±6.39%and 29.57±6.42%respectively,fat free mass of trunk 94.44±5.97%and 94.00±5.60%respectively,and the difference was statistically signi ficant(P<0.05).3)Quality of life:The body function scores before and after intervention was 87.66± 16.98 and 89.75± 15.23 respectively,the rale function scores 82.66±33.88 and 92.66±25.02 respectively,the body pain scores 80.01±19.18 and 87.58± 1 8.50 respectively,the overall health scores 62.73±15.25 and 72.24±16.30 respectively,the energy score scores 79.75±12.26 and 83.66±13.58 respectively,the social function scores 89.10± 17.29 and 92.85±16.55 respectively,the emotional function scores 89.10± 17.29 and 92.85± 16.55 respectively,the function scores 86.67±29.72 and 93.75±22.49 respectively,the mental health scores 80.55± 15.00 and 83.38± 13.08 respectively,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusions1)Total nutrition powder can effectively improve the nutritional status in the elderly with malnutrition or risk.2)Total nutrition powder can effectively improve the muscle strength and the motor function in the elderly with malnutrition or risk.3)Total nutrition powder can effectively improve the quality of life in the elderly with malnutrition or risk.
