Objective:To survey the nutrition status of patients in hospitals of Zhejiang province using the European Nutritional Risk Screen(NRS) method, and to offer a reality groundwork for clinical nutrition support.Method:Nutritional risk screen and the status of nutrition support were evaluated in hospitalized patients in 8 large hospitals in Zhejiang province:The screening of nutritional risk were carried out in the next morning enrolled. The body mass index (BMI) was adopted by Chinese standard in which lowered under 18.5 kg/m~2 is considered as malnutrition. For patients whose BMI could not be measured the serum albumin(sALB) were examined alternatively. The NRS includes three parts:①the severity of disease,②the nutrition status including BMI(or sALB),body weight change and the change of diet intake,③the ages of the patients. The total scores greater than 3 were justified as nutrition risk. Results:Totally 3599 patients were evaluated with NRS.Among them 860 patients which account for 23.9%were considered at nutrition risk.In the total 3599 patients nutritional support was given to 322 patients which account for 8.9%.In 860 patients with nutritional risk 152 ones which account for 17.7%received nutritional support. The nutrional support rate in 2739 patients without nutritional risk is 6.2%.BMI was measured in 3181 patients.Among them 687 ones which account for 21.6%were at nutritional risk.Of the 3181 patients,472 ones with their BMI<18.5 kg/m~2 were judged as malnutrition which account for 14.8%.The number of patients with BMI from 18.5 kg/m~2 to 24.0kg/m~2 were 1829 which account for 57.5%.Patients with BMI from 24.0 kg/m~2 to 28.0 kg/m~2 were 710 which account for 22.3%.Patients with BMI more than 28.13 kg/m~2(judged as obesity) were 170 which account for 5.3%.Conclusions:The present study explained that the NRS combined with the normal value of BMI for Chinese adults to screen the nutritional risk in the inpatients was feasible. It also indicates that the prevalence of malnutrition and the risk of nutrition are still high in hospitalized patients form Zhejiang province. However, the actual nutrition support could not meet the need of hospitalized patients so far.
