AIM: To observe the clinical efficacy of wearing RGP to treat anisometropic amblyopia.METHODS:A total of 15 anisometropia amblyopia patients(including15 eyes)were enrolled in this study from July 2016 to July 2017.There were 7 male patients and 8 female patients. The ages of subjects range between 8 to 13 years old. With an average age of 10.87±1.60.The average diopter of the amblyopic eye is-4.85±7.13 DS,and that of the fellow eye is-2.81±3.60 DS.10 patients have myopia anisometropia, and the other 5 patients have hyperopic anisometropia. After the first cycloplegic refraction,a comparison is made between the best corrected visual acuity of wearing frame glasses and that of wearing RGP.The same comparison is made after wearing RGP one year later. In addition, the visual acuities of wearing RGP for one year is compared to those subjects wearing RGP for the first time. The contrast sensitivity and stereopsis acuity between subjects wearing RGP and frame glasses are also assessed.Contrast sensitivity was examined by the machine OPTEC ?6500 which is made in the United States. Two luminance modes were used. One is 85cd/m2 and the other is 3cd/m 2.Five spatial frequencies of 1.5cpd,3.0cpd,6.0cpd,12.0cpd,18.0cpd are used.Titmus is used to assess stereopsis acuity of subjects. The result was divided into two groups based on the negative or positive of the values. All data were analyzed by SPSS version 22.0,and a P value less than 0.05 is considered statistically significant.RESULTS:(1)The average corrected visual acuity of subjects wearing RGP for the first time is 0.63±0.22,the average corrected visual acuity by wearing frame glasses is 0.49±0.19.There is significant difference between them through a paired sample t test,P=0.001(2)One year after wearing RGP,subjects wearing RGP have an average corrected vision of 0.79±0.18 whereas the average corrected vision of subjects wearing frame glasses is 0.63±0.17.A paired sample t test shows a P value less than 0.001.(3)After wearing RGP for 1year,the subjects had an average corrected visual acuity of 0.79±0.18 which is significantly better than the average visual acuity of wearing RGP for the first time.Among them, the corrected vision of 11 patients was 0.8 or above..P=0.001.(4)Contrast sensitivity of subjects wearing RGP were obviously better than that of subjects wearing frame glasses under each tested spatial frequency.(P<0.05)(5)The stereopsis acuity of subjects wearing RGP were also better than those wearing frame glasses.(P=0.003).CONCLUSION: Compared to frame glasses,RGP significantly improves the vision correction process of the amblyopic eye in patients with anisometropic amblyopia. And it has certain therapeutic effect on elder amblyopic children.Meanwhile, the fellow eye would no longer need to be patched, making the pediatric patients more cooperative to their treatment. Not only the visual acuity but also visual function(contrast sensitivity and stereopsis acuity)of anisometropic amblyopia patients is improved by wearing RGP.Due to the effectiveness of the RGP,it should take precedence in treatment plans in pediatrics of age 8 and higher with anisometropic amblyopia.
