Risks and accidents often occur.Resisting risks is important for every family and even the national economy, and health risks are one of the important risk factors. In recent years,China's disease morbidity and mortality have been rising, making physical health gradually become the focus of attention. However, with the rising prices of medical services, health care expenditure has become a major burden for Chinese families, especially rural families.China has initially established a basic social medical security system nationwide,it has alleviated the difficulty of medical treatment and medical burden for urban and rural residents to a certain extent, but there are still many places in the social medical security system that need to be improved,in addition, many factors such as personal factors, economic factors, social factors and the social medical security system itself make the participation of medical insurance in some areas low.Especially in the vast rural areas, the participation rate of medical insurance is lower, most rural families often rely on mutual assistance between relatives and friends in dealing with disease risks. This paper bases on the 2011 survey data of China Household Finance Survey to accomplish it,the study found that:(i)In rural areas, the social network of rural families has an alternative effect on the participation of farmers in medical insurance, that is,the wider scale of social network, the lower probability and the smaller scale of farmers purchasing medical insurance. This result is still robust after using different proxy variables for social network and adding different control variables.(ii)Social network is unstable and non-mandatory,and it has different substitution effects under different income levels.Empirical tests have shown that the substitution effect of social network on the participation of farmers in medical insurance will decrease with the increase of rural household income.(iii)The sharing function of social network is incomplete. The social network has different substitution effects under different types of medical insurance. The test results show that the substitution effect of social network on the participation of farmers in social medical insurance is greater than its substitution effects on commercial health insurance. The innovation of this paper lies in the innovation of research perspective and innovation of the research on the heterogeneity of the substitution effect of social network on medical insurance.Based on micro data, this paper combines social network and the participation of farmers in medical insurance innovatively, and explores the relationship between social network and medical insurance as two options for rural households to resist health risks from a unique perspective. In addition, this article examines the heterogeneity of this impact relationship at different income levels and different types of health insurance, which enriched the literature in the field of social network research. The meaning of the countermeasures in this article include the following: from the perspective of social medical security system and medical insurance,it is necessary to improve the existing social medical security system and insurance system design, increase the government's medical investment and support for poor families in rural areas. Also it is important to strengthen the medical level and service quality in rural areas, increase the promotion of commercial medical insurance in rural areas, and establish a diversified, fairer and more sustainable social medical security system to ensure the demand of medical services for different groups of people. From the perspective of social networks,in rural areas,it is important to strengthen the construction of harmonious communities and focus on cultivating the social networks of rural families. It will help to give full play to the social network's guarantee function for rural families and enhance the ability of rural households to withstand risks.
