Aims:To compare the clinical effects between scalp acupuncture combined with facial acupoints semi barbed therapy(SACFAST)(a kind of superficial needling)and conventional acupuncture(CA)to treat peripheral facial paralysis(PFP).Methods:A total of 60 patients diagnosed with acute PFP at the outpatient the third department of acupuncture of the First Affiliated Hospital of Heilongjiang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine,Harbin,China, between April 2018 and August 2018,were included in this study.Patients were divided into the two 30-member groups, the treatment group and the control group. The patients in the treatment group were treated with SACFAST,the patients in the control group were treated with CA.The patients were under strict observation throughout the treatment regiment. The data were collected and analysed following 7 days,14 days,21 days and 28 days during treatment paradigm.House-Brackmann facial nerve grading system was used as the evaluation criterion for facial nerve function recovery.Statistical methods were used to analyse and evaluate the results and compare the efficacy between the two groups.Results:1.Following the first 7 days of treatment,20 cases(66.7%)showed improvement in the treatment group,10 cases demonstrated no effect(33.3%),the total effective rate was 66.7%.In the control group,12 cases showed improvement(40%),18 cases were not effective(60%),and the total effective rate of 40% was observed.2.After 14 days,in the treatment group,3.3% of the patients were fully recovered, the effective rate of 26.7% was calculated, and the improvement rate of 63.3%,and the total effective rate of 93.3% was observed. In the control group, the improvement rate of 66.7%,and the total effective rate of 66.7%,were observed.3.Following the 21 days of the treatment,13 cases were fully recovered in the treatment group with the cure rate of 43.3%.On the other hand in the control group,8 of the cases recovered fully and the cure rate of 26.7% was observed.4.After 28 days,22 cases recovered completely in the treatment group, demonstrating the cure rate of 73.3%.However,on the other hand in the control group,12 cases recovered totally, and the cure rate of 40% was observed.5.Treatment shows that: During the course of treatment,in the treatment group,0 cases were recovered within the first 7 days,1 case(3.3%)was recovered till the 14 th day,12 cases(43.3%)were fully cured till the 21 st day,and 22 cases(73.3%)made the full recovery on the 28 th day of the treatment. In the control group,0 cases were recovered till the seventh day,on the 14 th day still no patient made any complete recovery.Howerver,8 cases(26.7%)were fully recovered on the twenty-first day,and 12cases(40%)were full healed on the 28 th day of treatment. So,it is observed that the treatment strategy(SACFAST),used for the patients in the treatment group is shorter and more effective as compare to the CA used in the control group.Conclusion:1.Both SACFAST and CA treatments for PFP have positive effects. However,SACFAST group has shown more promising outcomes as compared to the CA group.2.SACFAST and CA treatments for treating PFP are positive. However, the treatment strategy(SACFAST),used for the patients in the treatment group is shorter and more effective as compare to the CA used in the control group.
