Breathing regulation was also known as Qi-Regulation or inhalation and exhalation in ancient times. It was an important part and method when practising Qigong, which are more emphasis on the methods of breathing and the coordination of mind with breathing together.Confucianism,Buddhism,Taoism and medical science have always been widely used.Their rich experience summary and theoretical explanation have formed their own value characteristics and academic style in their respective fields. The first part of this study is theoretical analysis, which discusses about the author's life, background and content of the of Shoushiqing Treatise. The breathing regulation in Shoushiqing Treatise is created by You Cheng, who summarize the ideas of breathing regulation by various experts before the Qing Dynasty and combined his own understanding on it.Various methods of breathing regulation are recorded and their respective connotations are elaborated in Shoushiqing Treatise. As a method of Qigong, the essence of breathing regulation is to exercise and regulate the Body,Qi and Spirit of human life and make them trinity. Therefore, this paper also elaborates the concept of trinity life view of Body-Qi-Spirit theory in detail, and also clarifies the definition and connotation of Body,Qi and spirit. It is pointed out that human life is composed of three elements: Body,Qi and spirit, and the three elements of Body,Qi and spirit are one.Based on this, this paper thoroughly analyses the operation of breath-regulating method and its mechanism of health preservation and treatment in Shoushiqing Treatise, and elaborates the mechanism of breath-regulating from three aspects: the exercise and control of Body, the exercise and control of Qi,and the exercise and control of Spirit. It is pointed out that in the aspect of body control, both dynamic and static form, the body shape should be adjusted according to certain norms and requirements before breathing regulation, and the breathing movement should be guided by body movements in the process of breathing regulation;in the aspect of Qi exercise and control, the opening and closing of whole body Qi can be guided;in the aspect of exercise and control of Spirit, all the breathing practise are consciously involved and completed under the control of consciousness. All in all,the methods of breathing regulation in Shoushiqing Treatise reflects that people's consciousness concentrates on breathing movement to achieve the trinity of body,Qi and spirit. The second part of this study is the experimental evidence.30 college students with two-year history of practicing Qigong were monitored in real time under the condition of natural relaxation and breathing with the core intention of breathing and single-factor breathing with the method of breathing regulation mentioned in Shoushiqing treatise by using EEG technology. The EEG activities of each subject in three different states were observed and analyzed, and the differences of EEG changes in different states were compared. In the breathing state, the change of alpha wave in the prefrontal region was the main one,and the power of alpha wave in the prefrontal region was significantly higher than that in the other two states(P<0.05),but there was no significant difference in other bands and brain regions, which indicated that the breathing with intentional was related to resting.Through theoretical analysis and experimental evidences, this study reveals that the essence of the breathing regulation in Shoushiqing treatise is to exercise and regulate the human body's Body-Qi-Spirit.This provide modern scientific basis for the theory of breathing regulation, and enable the public to master its core during breathing practise.
