BackgroundMental Health Literacy is a concept which refers to the knowledge and belief that helps people recognize, manage and prevent mental illness. It is an important concept in the field of mental health care.Since the proposal of the theory by the Australian scholar Professor Jorm in 1997,the research on different nationalities and different populations has been increasing worldwide, and the cross-sectional descriptive research and comparative research are the main ones.Studies have shown that individuals with high mental health literacy are more likely to recognize mental illness and adopt appropriate solutions, while individuals with lower mental health literacy tend to adopt inappropriate or even wrong coping strategy. The more knowledge the individual has about mental health, the lower his chances of stigmatizing mental illness, and the more he is inclined to seek professional psychological assistance. Therefore,it is particularly important to improve the level of civic mental health literacy, and the first step is to assess the public's literacy level. In 2015,the reserachers of Griffith University,Australia,Matt O'Connor and Leanne Casey developed a mental health literacy scale that is structurally stable and can measure all the psychological attributes according to the definition and connotation of mental health literacy proposed by Jorm.Since then,MHLS had been used in the United States, the United Kingdom,Australia and other countries, and has showed good reliability and validity. In recent years,China's emphasis on the level of civic mental health has been continuously improved. Many scholars have begun to introduce the concept of mental health literacy, but there is still no significant progress in professional measurement tools.ObjectiveThis study intends to introduce the Mental Health Literacy Scale(MHLS)developed by Australian scholar Matt O'Connor, and conduct cross-cultural debugging according to the revised standards of the scales to make it more relevant to China's cultural background and language habits. The quality of the Chinese version of MHLS was tested to provide an effective tool for the future evaluation of mental health literacy in China.MethodsAfter obtaining the consent of the original author, the MHLS was forwardlytranslated, synthesized, back translated and culturally debugged.A convenient sampling method was used to measure citizens in a community in Hangzhou.Item Analysis, internal consistency of the scale, content validity were evaluated to verify the psychological characteristics, applicability and operability measured by the Chinese version of the Mental Health Literacy Scale.Results(1)A total of 356 data were collected in this study, with 63% of women and36% of men, average age is 28 years-old,mainly Han,unmarried, junior college or undergraduate.(2)The results of cognitive semantic analysis show that the Chinese version of the scale is filled in about 5-10 minutes, and the entries are easy to understand and basically conform to Chinese language habits.(3)Project analysis results show that the absolute value of the correlation coefficient of most items is greater than 0.3 and the P value is less than 0.01;the extreme group test shows that most of the items have significant differences between high and low groups,P value is less than 0.05,95% confidence interval does not include 0.(4)The Cronbach'? coefficient of the Chinese version of the MHLS scale is0.811,the content validity I-CVI is 0.83 or 1,and the S-CVI/Ave is 0.95.The exploratory factor analysis extracts 8 common traits with a characteristic root greater than 1.Factor,factor is combined into 6 common factors, the cumulative contribution rate of variance is 71.502%,greater than 40%,and the absolute value of each item's load on the corresponding factor is greater than 0.4.Conclusions(1)This study eventually formed the Chinese version of the Mental Health Literacy Scale(MHLS),a total of 6 dimensions, including 35 entries;(2)The Chinese version of the Mental Health Literacy Scale shows good discrimination and quality in project analysis, has good internal consistency in reliability, and has good content validity and structural validity in terms of validity;(3)The Chinese version of the Mental Health Literacy Scale has certain universality.According to the results of cognitive semantic analysis,it can be understood by people of different cultural levels and different professional backgrounds, which is easy to fill in,easy to operate, and practical.(4)The Chinese version of the Mental Health Literacy Scale can be used as apreliminary measurement tool for the measurement of citizens' mental health literacy level.Subsequent research can also be used as an auxiliary evaluation tool for mental health literacy intervention effects.
