A Clinical Comparative Study Between Medpor And Silicone Implants In Chin Augmentation

Objective: The aim of the study is to compare the clinical effects and complications of Medpor and silicone implants for chin augmentation,providing a better choice in the treatment of microgenia.Methods: A total of 67 patients with microgenia admitted to the plastic surgery department of Wuhan Union Hospital since 2015,were divided into two groups,group A and group B.Medpor prosthesis was used for mental augmentation in group A,and silicone prosthesis was used in group B.The clinical effects and complications of these two implants were observed and compared by taking anterior and lateral mental radiographs of patients,measuring mental height and mental projection,and conducting postoperative follow-up to investigate the satisfaction of patients.Effects were evaluated by measuring and comparing the preoperative and postoperative mental morphological photos,along with comparing patients’ average satisfaction degree scores,which were classified into five grades: very satisfied,satisfied,acceptable,not very satisfied and poor,corresponding score was 100 points,90 points,80 points,70 points and 60 points.Results: A total of 32 patients in group A had been followed up for 5-50 mouths.A total of 36 patients in group B had been followed up for 3-46 mouths.The satisfaction survey results show that the satisfaction rate of patients in group A is 87.50%,the dissatisfaction rate is 6.25%,and the average score is 95.00 points;the satisfaction rate of patients in group B is 80.56%,the dissatisfaction rate is 16.67%,and the average score is 91.94 point.There are three patients in group A showed symptoms of infection after surgery,one of whom improved after conservative treatment,and two removed the prostheses.In group B,two patients removed the implants due to postoperative infection,and four were dissatisfied with the postoperative effect,one of whom got satisfying postoperative effect after repair,the another removed the implants.Statistical analysis showed that both materials had improved mental projection and mental height,P < 0.05 was statistically significant in the comparison of mental projection’s change,P < 0.001 was obviously statistically significant in the change of mental height’s change.However,in the comparative analysis of infection,removal of chin prosthesis and overall satisfaction rate after surgery,the P value was greater than 0.05,without statistical significance.Conclusions: Both of these two implants can improve mental height and mental protrusion,but the long-term effect of Medpor prosthesis is better than that of silica gel prosthesis.For patients who pursue stable and natural postoperative effect with mild to moderate small mental deformity or shallow mental labial groove,Medpor should be a better choice.The silicone prosthesis can improve the mental height and the degree of mental projection to a greater extent,it’s more effective for moderate small mental deformity,especially for small mental deformity with insufficient mental height.There is no significant difference between the two materials in postoperative infection,prosthesis’ removal and overall satisfaction rate.
