Complications of motor weakness in a patient with non-neuromuscular critical illness in the intensive care unit(CMWPICU)is a common complication for critically ill patients in the intensive care unit(ICU).In this paper, the historical evolution, epidemiology, risk factors, clinical features, auxiliary examination, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, treatment and prognosis were summarized.Patients enter the ICU for various reasons, however,CMWPICU might suspect when patients developed muscle weakness and ventilator wean failure which were the first and the main symptoms of the complications.Approximately 11-69.8% of patients developed a CMWPICU after admission to ICU for 4 to 46 days(usually more than 7 days and mostly up to 2 weeks or so).The CMWPICU can be divided into critical illness myopathy(CIP),critical illness polyneuropathy(CIM)and the combination of the two(CIP + CIM).The CIP accounts for approximately 46.2-48%(there are individual reports of 3% or 72%)of cases, while the CIM is approximately14-43% and CIP + CIM is 14-57.9%.Patients who were diagnosed with CMWPICU had a mechanical ventilation time of(~21.8-32.88)(~7-104)[(median)(range)] days,a length of the ICU stay of ~12.2-49.2(median)days,and a hospital stay of~25.1-76.2(median)days.Approximately 5-49% of patients died during hospitalization, and 53.6-88% of patients were discharged;of the discharged patients,46.2-83.8% of them eventually fully recovered,16.2-30.8% had different degrees of sequelae, and approximately 0-23%died.
