Bone Grafting Combined With Titanium Elastic Intramedullary Nailing As A Treatment For Bone Cyst In Children

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of curettage and bone grafting combined with titanium elastic intramedullary nailing(TEN)versus curettage and bone grafting for the treatment of bone cyst,so as to clarify whether it is necessary to use TEN in the treatment of bone cyst.METHODS:From January 2009 to January 2017,we collected the basic date of children with bone cyst who received surgical treatment in our hospital.The patients were divided into TEN group and non–titanium elastic intramedullary nailing(NTEN)group.Date of sex,age,location,mobility,pathological fracture,cyst volume,or duration of surgery were collected.The outcomes were evaluated for both groups using the Neer evaluation criteria.RESULTS: A total of 48 patients were included;they were assigned to the TEN group including 22 patients who underwent curettage and bone grafting combined with TEN or the NTEN group including 26 patients who underwent curettage and bone grafting alone.There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in sex,age,location,mobility,pathological fracture,cyst volume,or duration of surgery(p>0.05);the treatment response rate was 90.9% in the TEN group,and69.2% in the NTEN group,with statistically significant difference between the two groups(p<0.05).CONCLUSION: In the treatment of bone cyst in children,curettage and bone grafting combined with TEN could significantly improve the patient's outcomes compared with curettage and bone grafting alone,based on which it is recommended to routinely use TEN in addition to curettage and bone grafting in the treatment of bone cyst.
