Background:The reduced mean platelet volume(MPV)is a promising indicator of platelet activity in the setting of tumor development. This research was designed to assess the relationship between preoperative MPV and survival outcomes of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)following liver transplantation(LT).Materials and Methods:The demographic information and clinical characteristics of 304 HCC patients with LT were collected from LT data bank. The MPV cut-off value was determined with a receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. The factors were firstly analyzed with Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, then the factors with P<0.1 were selected to enter into multivariate Cox multiple factors regression analysis and defined the independent risk agents for poor prognosis. Results:The 1-,3-,and 5-year overall survival were 95.34%,74.67%and 69.29%in the normal MPV group, respectively, and 95.40%,59.97%and 42.94%in patients with reduced MPV,respectively(P<0.01).Furthermore,no significant difference was observed on post-LT complications between normal MPV and reduced MPV groups. The reduced MPV was identified as one of the independent prognostic risk factor for recipient survival(P=0.007;HR,1.82;95%confidence interval:1.18-2.81).Conclusion:The preoperative reduced MPV could be regarded as an available indicator for predicting prognosis of HCC patients after LT.
