BackgroundWhite blood cell(WBC)count and neutrophils ratio(NEUR)are important indicators of the inflammatory reaction and inflammation is a risk factor for hypertension. However, there are few rqPorts on the relationship between WBC count,NEUR and hypertension in China.PurposeExplore the relationships between WBC count or NEUR and hypertension to provide evidence for the prevention and clinical treatment of hypertension.MethodsThe physical exanination data of workers in the first people's Hospital of KUnshan in 2016 were collected, and 1838 subjects were included in the study after excluded the missing data.Questionnaire survey, physical examination and collection of blood samples were implemented by qualified investigators. The comparison of general situation according to the diagnostic criteria of hypertension, and compared the distribution of WBC count or NEUR in patients with high-normal blood pressure and hypertension.A single or multiple logistic regression model was used to analyze the correlation between different WBC counts or NEUR and hypertension after grouping by sex.Odds ratios(ORs)and 95%confidence interval(95%CI)of study outcomes were calculated by using single or multiple logistic model, and linear tendency tests were conducted. We analyzed the risk of hypertension in higher WBC counts or higher NEUR objects after stratified by sex or not,and estimate the dose-response relationship between WBC count or NEUR and hypertension. All statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS 23.0 and Stata 14.0 statistical software and a significance level of 0.05.Results1.In the study, there were 328 participants with high-normal blood pressure and 228 participants with hypertension, and the prevalence was 12.4%.There was statistical significance in the difference of WBC count between normal blood pressure,high-normal blood pressure and hypertension(P<0.001).2.The gender distribution of different WBC counts and NEUR levels were significantly different(all P<0.001),and the proportion of men increased with WBC count(trend P<0.001).3.The prevalenceof hypertension at different WBC levels were different, the prevalence of hypertension increased with the increase of WBC count(trend P<0.001),while the prevalence of hypertension at different NEUR had no statistical difference. The prevalence of hypertension with different WBC counts and NEUR levels were statistically different in men(all P<0.05),but there was no difference among females.4.WBC eount and NEUR were divided into four grades aceording to the quartiles of WBC counts and NEUR.The association between WBC count and hypertension was analyzed, the OR(95%CI)of the WBC count at the level of Q4 was statistically significant after adjusting multiple factors,OR(95%CI)was 1.716(1.095,2.688).In addition, there was no association between NEUR and the risk of hypertension. The risk of hypertension increased when the WBC count at Q4 level in male group,OR(95%CI)was 2.000(1.043,3.836).5.There was a dose-response relationship between NEUR and hypertension in the overall and male subjects. The risk of hypertension increased with the increase of NEUR.6.High WBC counts and high NEUR could increase the risk of hypertension in male participants,OR(95%CI)were 1.672(1.039,2.692)and 1.637(1.017,2.635),respectively.It was not found in both general and female subjects.Conclusions1.The prevalence of hypertension was 12.4%.The WBC count among normal blood pressure,high-normal blood pressure and hypertension was different. The gender distribution of different WBC counts and NEUR levels was different.2.The prevalenceof hypertension increased with WBC count in general population. There was significant difference in the prevalence of hypertension at different WBC counts and NEUR levels in male, but no difference was found in female.3.High WBC counts and high NEUR could increase the riskof hypertension in male participants, but it was not found in both general and female subjects. There was a dose-response relationship between WBC count,NEUR and hypertension.
