Objective To investigate the effect of low body mass index(BMI)on early postoperative complications of esophageal cancer in the elderly. Methods The clinical data of 210 patients with esophageal cancer who underwent radical resection from January 2013 to October 2018 were retrospectively analyzed in the department of thoracic surgery of The First Affiliated Hospital Of Guangxi Medical University.Patients with age under60,received radiation or chemotherapy before the Surgical treatment,Preoperative hypertension or diabetes mellitus, body mass index(BMI)? 24 kg /m2 were excluded. The clinical data of 180 were ultimately collected. The clinical data of 180 patients were divided into two groups, one group for lower BMI group(BMI < 18.5 Kg / ?,n=43),another group with normal BMI(18.5 Kg / ? ?BMI < 24 Kg / ?,n=137).The Incidence of complications and anemia and hypoproteinemia were compared between the two groups. Results The incidences of anemia and hypoproteinemia in the low BMI group was significantly higher than those in the normal BMI group(34.9% VS19.0%,X2=4.71,P<0.05;23.3% VS 8.8%,X2=6.41,P<0.05).The incidencesof incisional infection and Lung infection in the low BMI group was significantly higher than those in the normal BMI group(16.3%VS5.1%,P<0.05;7%VS0.7%,X2=5.88,P<0.05).There was no significant difference in the incidences of chylothorax, cardiac complications, anastomotic fistula between the two groups(X2=3.35,X2=0.30,X2=0.07,P>0.05).Conclusion Compared with the normal BMI group, patients in the low BMI group were more likely to develop Lung infection and incisional infection.Intervention can be conducted according to the BMI of patients,in order to reduce the occurrence of complications.
