Objective1.To investigate the incidence of anxiety and depression in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE).2.To learn about the use of social media(SM)in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.3.To study the factors influencing the incidence of anxiety and/or depression in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.4.To explore the correlation between the social media use(SMU)and the incidence of anxiety and/or depression in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.MethodsIn our study,.402 patients diagnosed as systemic lupus erythematosus with the revised American College of Rheumatology(ACR)criteria were recruited from Department of Rheumatology in the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University between July 2018 and October 2018 by means of a questionnaire survey.Socio-demographic and clinical characteristic date were collected.SLE disease activity was assessed with the System Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index 2000(SLEDAI-2000),Anxiety and depression were assessed by Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale(HADS),Visual Analogue Scale(VAS)was used to assessed pain level. All the data statistics in this study were calculated by software SPSS17.0,Descriptive analyses of independent variables such as demographic and clinical variables, anxiety and depression, pain and SMU were performed.Since the independent variables were correlated, the binary logistic regression model was reported,a forward selection method was utilized to determine the significant risk factors affecting mental health in the presence of the other risk factors. The significance level for all results was set at P ?0.05.ResultsOf the patients,24.4% had a co-morbidity and the mean SLEDAI score was 3.33±3.25.The average of pain scores were 1.29±1.92.28.4%(116)and 41.1%(166)of participants were considered anxious and depressive respectively with an average score of 6.71 on the HADS Anxiety Subscale(SD=3.65)and an average score of 5.45 on the HADS Depression Subscale(SD=3.86).Whether use SM or not,the pain level, disease activity and the number of household were associated with the presence of both anxiety and depression(P<0.05).Co-morbidity and medical insurance were found to be correlated with the incidence of depression(P<0.01,P<0.001).SMU was a significant factor, anxiety and/or depressive symptoms were more severe in patients without SM(P<0.05).In addition, pain and SLEDAI score was important, higher pain level and disease activity increased the risk of anxiety as well as depression.Patients with more family numbers had a higher risk of anxiety, while co-morbidity and lack of medical insurance were the risk factors related to the presence of depression. It showed a correlation between the frequency of SMU and the incidence of anxiety(P<0.05)and depression(P<0.01).In addition, the presence of depression also had a association with the duration for SMU(P<0.05).The platform of SM,the reasons for SMU and the average time used on SM daily were not found to have a significant correlation with the anxiety or depression.ConclusionDepression and anxiety have a high incidence in SLE patients, and the incidence is influenced by social media use, pain, disease activity and family number, high frequency social media use may reduce the risk of anxiety and depression,so educating SLE patients to use social media properly may alleviate anxiety and depressive symptoms in SLE patients.
