Background:Toxicity by oxygen radical has been suggested as an important cause of cancer. It has long been proposed that albumin, bilirubin and uric acid may inhibit cancer development due to their antioxidative properties.Several researchers have reported an association between the level of serum uric acid, bilirubin and albumin and the breast, prostate, colorectal and lung cancer. However, the relative study aimed at oral cancer and salivary gland neoplasms is rare.Purpose:To evaluate the level of serum uric acid, bilirubin and albumin in patients with oral cancers or salivary gland neoplasms, then to compare and correlate it with those of normal subjects and also to determine the role of uric acid, bilirubin and albumin in the etiology of oral cance as well as the salivary gland neoplasms.Material and method:In this study,154 clinically and histopathologically diagnosed oral cancers and salivary gland neoplasms patients and 154 age-and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled(55 oral cancers cases,17 malignant salivary neoplasms cases,82 benign salivary neoplasms cases).Blood samples were taken and analyzed in the clinical laboratory in the second hospital of Shandong University.Statistical analysis of differences within and between the study groups was carried out using the Student's t-test and Pearson's correlation. Results:The serum uric acid and albumin is significantly lower in patients with oral cancers, while there was no noticeable difference in bilirubin. The serum albumin level of patients with salivary tumors was found to be significantly lower. However, the uric acid and bulirubin levels show no statistical significance. Conclusion:There is a significant decrease in serum albumin level in patients with oral cancers and both malignant and benign salivary tumors, while the level of bilirubin shows no statistical difference.Compared to the healthy control groups, the level of uric acid in patients with malignant oral and salivary tumors is significantly lower.By contrast, there is no significant difference in the patients with benign salivary tumors.
