Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of peripheral retinal abnormalities in patients with age-related macular degeneration.Record the type, appearance and distribution of peripheral retinal changes, find out the relationship between peripheral and macular retinal changes. Methods: Ultra-wide field fundus color image and UWFFAF were taken for both ARMD and control group using Optos 200 Tx laser scanning ophthalmoscope.Results:1.There were statistical differences on the frequency o·f peripheral retinal abnormality between eyes with wet-ARMD and control group or dry-ARMD and control group(P<0.05).By using logistic regression analysis, eyes with ARMD had a higher risk for abnormal FAF compared with normal eyes.2.There were statistical differences on the frequency of peripheral drusen,RPE hyperpigmentation and RPE hypopigmentation among the 3 groups(?2=11.50,P=0.003;?2=10.13,P=0.006;P=0.027).There were statistical differences on the frequency of granular increased FAF and mottled decreased FAF among the 3 groups(?2=9.13,P=0.010;?2=7.94,P=0.019).On the frequency of peripheral drusen,RPE hyperpigmentation, granular increased FAF,there were statistical differences between wet-ARMD eyes and control group or dry-ARMD eyes and control group(P<0.05).On the frequency of RPE hypopigmentation and mottled decreased FAF,there were statistical differences between wet-ARMD eyes and control group(P<0.05).There were no statistical differences on the frequency of RPE atrophy and nummular decreased FAF among the 3 groups(P>0.05).3.Both ultra-widefield color images and UWFFAF showed the superior periphery was less commonly involved compared with other 3 image quadrants(P < 0.05)and there was no statistical difference among other quadrants(P>0.05).Conclusion:1.Different types of peripheral retinal changes could be seen outside the macular area in ARMD patients.2.ARMD type was a risk factor for peripheral retinal abnormality.3.Peripheral drusen,RPE hyperpigmentation and granular increased FAF occurred more frequently in ARMD eyes compared with control group, and peripheral RPE hypopigmentation, mottled decreased FAF occurred more frequently in wet ARMD eyes compared with control group.4.Peripheral retinal changes were less commonly observed in the superior peripheral, compared with other 3 image quadrants.
