Objective: To understand the incidence and demographic characteristics of suicidal ideation in cancer patients and explore the relationship between depression and suicidal ideation through investigating the suicidal ideation of inpatient cancer patients;Interviewing cancer inpatient with suicidal ideation,to understand the patient's suicide risk factors,protective factors,the needs of patients and the mental development of suicidal ideation,so as to provide advice and basis for clinical nursing staffs to prevent inpatient suicide.Methods: A total of 500 patients admitted from two oncology departments in Hubei Province from June 2016 to October 2016 were selected as investigators.The self-made patient general information questionnaire,patient health questionnaire(PHQ-9),suicide probability scale(SPS)were used for survey,310 cases finished questionnaire.The SPSS20.0 was used for statistical analysis.A total of 20 hospitalized cancer patients with suicidal ideation were selected,and a semi-structured in-depth interview was conducted on the subjects with the phenomenological research method.Interview data were analyzed by Claizzi seven-step analysis.Results: The incidence of suicidal ideation in hospitalized patients was 11.0%(score?70),the incidence of depression was 7.1%(score ?10),and the patient's depression score was positively correlated with the likelihood of suicide(PHQ-9 vs SPS.,R =0.381,P = 0.000).The scores of suicide probation scores were statistically significant in terms of sex,age,educational level,marital status and living status of 310 hospitalized cancer patients(P <0.05).There was no statistically significant difference in the status of work,current residence,monthly average income,the payment method and longtime of the disease(P> 0.05).The results of the interview were finalized on both the risk factors and the protective factors.Risk factors included 10 sub-themes such as low quality of life,poor prognosis of disease,maladaptation after illness,loneliness,burdensome,economic stress,negative life events,meaninglessness of life,self-blame and anger.Protective factors included 6 sub-themes:fear of death,fear of the impact of suicide on their families,planning for future life,family responsibility,family and friends support,psychological flexibility.Conclusion: In assessing the likelihood of suicide among patients,they should give appropriate attention to hospitalized cancer patients with different demographic characteristics.Depression is associated with suicide,and clinicians need care about patient with depression and provide timely treatment.Suicide is usually caused by a variety of reasons,for each patient,are integrated with unique physiological,psychological,social and cultural factors.Prevention and intervention of suicide in hospitalized cancer patients should not only focus on reducing the risk factors of suicide in patients,but also to explore the protective factors of patients,so as to reduce the patient's suicidal ideation,thus eliminating the idea of suicide.
