Objective To detect the expression of polyimmunoglobulin receptor(PIGR)in breast cancer patients and to investigate the correlation between the expression of PIGR and the prognosis of breast cancer. Methods We measured the messenger RNA(mRNA)levels of pIgR via the analysis in the ONCOMINE database and protein expression levels with Immunohistochemistry(IHC)and enzyme linked immunesorbent assay(ELISA)analysis in benign breast tumor and breast cancer patients. The survival of patients was assessed by the Breast Cancer Gene-Expression Miner Version 4.1(bc-GenExMiner v4.1)and Kaplan-Meier analysis. Results pIgR was down-regulated in breast cancer patients compared to benign tumors at mRNA,tissues and serum protein levels. And we found that its expression was correlated with Estrogen receptor(ER),Progesterone receptor(PR)and lymph node status. The data from the bc-GenExMiner v4.1 revealed that up-regulated pIgR was significantly associated with better prognosis.Additionally,Kaplan-Meier analysis demonstrated that patients with low pIgR expression had a significantly shorter relapse-free survival and overall survival than those with high expression. Conclusion Our findings revealed that pIgR expression was reduced in breast cancer, and it may be a marker and an independent prognostic predictor for patients with breast cancer.
