?Background? It is well accepted that there was a link between cognitive impairment and epilepsy. The severity of cognitive impairment was associated with the Characteristics of epilepsy, treatment and social-psychological factors. At present, there is no comprehensive evaluation tool for epileptic patients in China.Birmingham cognitive screen(BCoS)designed by the Birmingham University,UK,provides a comprehensive assessment for patients with brain lesions. It had been proved to be a promising tool for screening cognitive impairment in brain damaged patients in both the Europe and Guangdong, mainland China.?Objective? Our study aimed to explore the characteristics of cognitive impairment in patients with epilepsy using BCoS.We then compared with other scales which were commonly used in cognitive assessment of epilepsy.?Methods?A total of 30 patients with epilepsy were recruited in our study.Their cognitive data were collected using BCoS,Montreal Cognitive Assessment Test(MoCA),Mini Mental State Examination(MMSE),and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence scale(WAIS).?Results?1.Epileptic patients got lower scores in four cognitive domain including language, memory, digital processing and praxis. To be specific, patients group got lower score in nonwords reading, complex figure copy, personal information orientation(P<0.05).While guidance language comprehension, gesture production, orientation, task recall and recognition, picture naming, story recall and recognition(immediate and delayed),number reading, gesture recognition, imitation, were Significantly lower than the healthy controls(P<0.01).2.The total score of MMSE and MOCA in epileptic group was lower than that of the healthy controls(P<0.05).3.The Full Intelligence Quotient,Verbal Intelligence Quotient and Performance Intelligence Quotient in the epileptic group were lower than the healthy controls(P<0.05).4.BCoS,MMSE?MoCA?WAIS-RC showed that the cognitive impairment were highly prevalent in individuals with epilepsy. In addition,BCoS provide precision cognitive domains assessment for the patients with epilepsy.?Conclusion?1.The patients with epilepsy have extensive cognitive impairment in language, memory, digital processing and praxis. It includes naming aphasia, semantic understanding disorder,short-term memory disorder,long-term memory disorder, disorientation, digital reading comprehension disorder, and ideomotor apraxia.2.The BCoS is more comprehensive than MMSE,MOCA and WAIS-RC.It showed more details in cognitive dysfunction. It is a more promising assess tool for the patients with epilepsy.
