Objectives:1.To investigate the changes of serum levels of macrophage migration inhibitory factor(MIF)and epidermal growth factor(EGF)protein in serum of first-episode schizophrenic patients and the association of these changes with PANSS scores. The correlation between the serum levels of the two protein factors was investigated as well.2.To investigate the association of serum levels of MIF and EGF with cognitive function in patients with schizophrenia to offer a new perspective on the pathological mechanisms of schizophrenia. Methods:We conducted a case-control study and used enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA)to measure the serum levels of MIF and EGF in 70 patients with first episode schizophrenia and 74 healthy controls.Patients with first-episode schizophrenia were scored using the PANSS scale, cognitive evaluation was performed using the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery(MCCB)in both patients and healthy controls.55 patients with schizophrenia and 59 healthy controls were completed the MCCB.The association of the two protein factors serum levels with the cognitive function score were investigated in the two group. Results:The serum levels of protein factor MIF and EGF in schizophrenic patients were higher than those in the healthy control group, serum levels of MIF were (50.94±24.71)vs(38.89±19.27)ug/L,P<0.05;serum levels of EGF were(5167.07±2258.75)vs(3798.11±1637.24)ng/L,P<0.05 ?In the patient group, serum levels of MIF were positively correlated with the corresponding PANSS symptom scores(r=0.264,P<0.05);? In the patient group, serum concentrations of MIF and EGF were positively correlated(r= 0.784,P<0.05).There was a positive correlation between serum MIF and EGF levels in the control group(r=0.644,P<0.05).? The serum levels of MIF in the patient group were positively correlated with Brief Visuospatial Memory Test-Revised score in the MCCB test(r=0.405,P<0.05);? In the patient group, the levels of serum protein EGF were positively correlated with Brief Visuospatial Memory Test-Revised scores in the MCCB test(r=0.293,P<0.05).Conclusions:? The serum levels of MIF and EGF in the first episode of schizophrenia were significantly higher than those in the healthy control group, suggesting that schizophrenia patients have abnormal neuroimmune responses and fluctuations in neurotrophic nutrition at the early stage of the disease,This suggests that early detection, early diagnosis and early treatment of schizophrenic patients are necessary.? The levels of serum protein MIF in the patient group was positively correlated with the total score of PANSS symptom scores. It is speculated that the severity of microglia damage may be related to the inflammatory response and severity of schizophrenic symptoms.? There was a positive correlation between serum MIF and EGF in the patient group, indicatingthat the neuroimmune response in the early stage of schizophrenia is related to the fluctuation of neurotrophic nutrition.? The serum levels of MIF in the patient group were positively correlated with Brief Visuospatial Memory Test-Revised score in the MCCB test(r=0.405,P<0.05);The levels of serum protein EGF were positively correlated with Brief Visuospatial Memory Test-Revised score in the MCCB test. These results may indicate that cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenic patients may be associated with serum protein factor levels.
