China has entered an aging society, and the mental health problems of the elderly are becoming increasingly prominent.Socioemotional selectivity theory(SST)is a life-span development theory of motivation to explain the aging psychology.Taking future time perspective as the starting point, the cognitive assessment of the future time will affect social goals of the elderly, and social goals then affect emotional state and social behavior of the elderly. This study is based on Socioemotional selectivity theory to measure the depression level of Chinese elderly, and to explore the relationship between future time perspective, emotional regulation and geriatric depression.Using the Future Time Perspective(FTP)questionnaire,Emotion Regulation Questionnaire(ERQ)and Geriatric Depression Scale(GDS)as measuring tools,235 elderly people were used as the research subjects, and the characteristics of future time perspective, emotional regulation and the status of geriatric depression were analyzed. The results of the study are as follows:1.Future time perspective of the elderly is at the lower-middle level, and future time perspective of the elderly with physical and mental illness is significantly lower than that of the elderly without physical and mental illness.2.The elderly tend to adopt the strategy of cognitive reappraisal. The differences of cognitive reappraisal were significant in gender, pension, physical and mental illness, education and family monthly income, and the difference of expression suppression was significant in the educational level.3.The prevalence rate of depression in elderly was 51.6%,of which mild depression accounted for 42.6%,and moderate to severe depression accounted for 8.1%.High pension,no physical illnesses and high family monthly income are protective factors for depression in the elderly.4.Geriatric depression was significantly negatively correlated with future time perspective, cognitive reappraisal and emotional regulation.Future time perspective was positively correlated with cognitive reappraisal, expression suppression and emotional regulation.5.Cognitive reappraisal plays a partial mediating role between future time perspective and geriatric depression.
