Objective To investigate the clinical efficacy and prognosis of radiofrequency modified Maze procedure with concomitant cardiac valve surgery on patients with atrial fibrillation. Methods Sixty patients with atrial fibrillation and valvular heart diseases who underwent cardiac valve surgery alone as control group and seventy-five patients who underwent bipolar radiofrequency modified Maze procedure with concomitant cardiac valve surgery as active group were retrospectively analyzed.Comparison of perioperative technological characteristics and postoperative restoration of sinus rhythm in different time-points were performed between the control group and active group. Results Baseline characteristics between both groups were well comparable(P>0.05).There was no significant differences regarding the surgical pathway and types of replaced cardiac valves, but the cardiopulmonary bypass time and aortic cross-lamp time in the active group were significantly longer than those in the control group.Successful restoration of sinus rhythm in the active group were significantly higher than those in the control group after surgery immediately,at discharge, postoperative 3 months,6 months, and 1 year, respectively. Conclusions Radiofrequency modified Maze procedure with concomitant cardiac valve surgery is clinically effective during the short term for the patients who had atrial fibrillation and valvular heart diseases.
