Objective: To explore the clinical features of intussusception in school-age children. Methods: 73 school-age children with intussusception hospitalized by Shenjing Hospital from January 1,2011 to December 31,2015 were retrospected, including clinical manifestation, imaging examination and therapeutic process,to explore the clinical features of intussusception in school-age children. Results: A total of 3042 patients were identified: 73(2.4%)patients were?6 years old,and 2969(97.6%)patients were<6 years old.The clinical symptoms were abdominal pain(68/73,98.2%),vomiting(42/73,57.5%),bloody stools(6/73,8.2%)and palpable abdominal mass(39/73,53.4%).There were 2 children(2.7%)with all the four symptoms. The triad of bloody stools, vomiting and abdominal pain was encountered in 4 children(5.5%)from 73 school-age children with intussusception.72 of 73 school-age children with intussusception underwent a ultrasound examination. And 69 children had a presentation of a target sign or a sleeve sign on ultrasound images. The success rate of enema reduction was much lower in school-age children compared with children younger than 6(79.5%:96.7%).In addition, children in school-age were more likely to undergo operation(20.6%:3.3%)and had a greater rate of bowel necrosis(2.7%:0.3%).The incidence of secondary intussusception was much higher in school-age children than that in children younger than 6(23.3%:1.0%).Excluding secondary intussusception, the success rate of enema reduction in group of school-age children was similar with group of children younger than 6(96.4%:97.4%).Conclusion: The clinical manifestation of school-age children is atypical. The incidence of secondary intussusception is much higher in school-age children than that in children younger than 6.Enema reduction is safe and effective to primary intussusception in school-age children.
