Objective: Anthropometric indices have been proved related to many diseases, such as metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular diseases, hypertension and diabetes. It has been proved that body mass index, and waist circumference,waist-hip ratio which could reflect abdominal obesity, were related to hypertension. But the relationship between hip circumference and hypertension had controversial results in associated researches. This research aims at discussing the relationship between hip circumference and hypertension in people with or without abdominal obesity. Methods: In rural region of Liaoning province,multi-stage stratified cluster random sampling method was used to select 11499 residents age≄35 as a result(in which 5321 were males,6178 were females).Blood routine examination and blood biochemistry including liver function, serum glucose and serum lipids were tested by taking fast blood samples in the morning.Anthropometric indices such as height, weight, waist circumference and hip circumference were measured and body mass index was calculated later. The basic information, history of diseases, life style, and mental status of participants were acquired with questionnaires carefully taken by specialists. Results: Compared with people in normal waist circumferences with hypertension, people in abdominal obesity had higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure, body mass index, and hip circumference. In males, systolic and diastolic pressure were significantly related to hip circumference quartiles in people without abdominal obesity, but the relationship disappeared in who with abdominal obesity. In females, systolic and diastolic blood pressure were both significantly higher in highest quartile group of hip circumference regardless with or without abdominal obesity.Additionally, the highest prevalence of hypertension appeared in males without abdominal obesity and females with abdominal obesity. The linear regression suggested that after adjusting BMI and other risk factors, hip circumference had weak relationship to hypertension in people with abdominal obesity regardless gender, but hip circumference had significant relationship to hypertension in non-abdominal obesity people. In multivariate logistic regression model, regardless with abdominal obesity or not,the quartile of hip circumference was higher, the risk of hypertension was higher. However, after adjustingBMI in the same model, the risk became weak in participants with abdominal obesity, and the risk was reduced slightly but remained significant in participants without abdominal obesity. Conclusion: In conclusion, the present study found that in participants with abdominal obesity, there was no relationship between hip circumference and hypertension risk. But in participants without abdominal obesity, larger hip circumference might increase the risk of hypertension.
