Study On The Validity Of Mobile Phone Application Method In Assessing Dietary Nutrition Intake Of Pregnant Women

Objective:This study compared a menue-record dietary survey method based on mobile phone application method with dietary survey golden standard(weighing-recording method),and common dietary survey methods(24-h dietary retrospective method and food frequency questionnaire survey method),to evaluate the mobile phone application method in assessing the accuracy,correlations and consistency of dietary nutrition intake of pregnant women,combined with the analysize of ratio of recipe materials,food-weight estimation analysis,acceptance analysis and cost analysis.This study aimed at evaluating the validity of mobile phone application menu-record method which uesed to evaluate dietary nutrition of pregnant women,discussing the direction of improvement and providing new ideas and breakthroughs for the future development of dietary survey.Methods:We recruited 79 subjects in Wuqiang county,Hebei province.They successively completed mobile phone application menu-record method,24-h dietary retrospective method and food frequency questionnaire survey method.There are 28 people accepted the weighing-recording method(abbreviation for the weighing method).In the survey of the mobile phone application menu-record method(abbreviation for APP method),respondents independently recorded their diet in the form of recipes through a mobile phone dietary assessment application(APP).In 24-h dietary retrospective method(abbreviation for 24-h recalls)survey,investigators used 24-h recalls to investigate respondents' dietary intake,used the weighing method to investigate family's intake of edible oil and condiments.In the weighing method survey,surveyors recorded total dietary intake of respondents.Each of the above dietary survey methods was conducted for three consecutive days,including two working days and one weekend day.In the food frequency questionaire method(FFQ)survey,investigators used an online food frequency questionnaire to investigate respondents about their dietary intake over the past week.Results:Compared with weighing method,APP method could accurately evaluate the average daily intake of soybeans and its products,fruits,nuts,livestock and poultry meat,aquatic products,eggs,dairy products,pickles,snacks,ice-cream and drinks.However,the APP method underestimated the intake of cereals(59.1 ± 102.4)g/d(P=0.0050),vegetables(226.5± 181.7)g/d(P<0.0001),edible oil(14.0±15.2)g/d(P<0.0001),edible salt(3.3 ±3.6)g/d(P<0.0001),which had more under-estimated respondents than other foods.In the evaluation of energy and nutrient intake,APP method could accurately evaluete the average daily of protein,fat,cholesterol,dietary fiber,iron,zinc,selenium,and vitamin with no statistically significant difference observed compared with weighing method.However,the APP method underestimated the intake of energy 230.4 kcal/d(P=0.018),carbohydrate 32.8 g/d(P=0.044),calcium 135.7mg/d(P=0.001),potassium1847.4mg/d(P<0.0001)and sodium 1612.5mg/d(P<0.0001).The results of correlation analysis showed that the APP method and weighing had well correlation when accessing grains,vegetables,fruits,nuts,milk,energy,protein,carbohydrate,vitamin B2,calcium,potassium,iron,zinc and selenium.Correlation coefficient decreases after energy adjustment.Bland-altman scatter plot of consistency analysis of the differience of APP method and weighing method showed that there were 89.3%-96.4%respondents located between the 95%consistency limit lines.The results of comparison of APP method and 24-h recalls,APP method and FFQ method showed that APP method evaluating the intake of cereals,nuts,eggs,aquatic products,pickles,snacks,drinks,ice cream,energy,carbohydrate,vitamin A,vitamin E and calcium were of the same accuracy with 24-h recalls.The APP method evaluating of grains,legumes,nuts,aquatic products,milk,pickles and snacks were of the same accuracy with FFQ method.Compared with weighing method,the proportion of vegetable,edible oil and salt in the recipe of APP method are lower.The same subjects used the APP method to estimate the weight of the same food is also lower than that obtained by the weighing method.94.1%of respondents believe the APP method of simple easy to operate,72.3%and 61.7%of respondents believed that those polled thought staple food,cooking food measure have difficulty,85.7%of respondents leakage of reason for food "forget into the APP.The vast majority of respondents believe that the APP is good for their own and their children's nutritional health.Conclusion:Compared with weighing method,the APP method can accurately evaluate some food intake,including fruit,milk,edible sugar intake,at the same time also can accurately evaluate protein,vitamin B2,iron,zinc,selenium intake.Although compared with weighing method.The method of APP,24-hour recalls and FFQ equally underestimated grains,energy,carbohydrate intake.At the same time,the APP method in evaluation of fruits,livestock and poultry meat,eggs,milk,other food intake,protein,cholesterol,vitamin B,iron,zinc,selenium and other nutrients intake when accuracy is superior to FFQ method for 24-h recalls.Thus we conceived that in the evaluation of grains,fruits,livestock and poultry meat,eggs and dairy food intake,the APP method could replace 24-h recalls method and FFQ method.In this study,APP method could accurately evaluate the overall respondents average intake of livestock and poultry meat,eggs,fat,vitamin A,vitamin B1,nicotinic acid,vitamin C and vitamin E,however for individual intake of these food and nutrients,APP method could not accurately evaluate.APP method significantly underestimate vegetables,cooking oil,salt,water,calcium,potassium and sodium,but the underestimate could be improved by improving food-weight estimate accuracy ratio,adjust the APP recipe materials portion.We believe that with the inprovement and optimization of APP method,the method could will be applied in future dietary survey.Internet based dietary nutrition technology will become the technology support of nutrition survey meeting the need of social development.
