Objective The objective of this study was to assess the correlation of gender, age, body mass index(BMI),Risser signs, scoliotic side, scoliotic position with the scoliotic curve severityin patients newly diagnosed withidiopathic scoliosis(IS).Methods This cross-sectional study encompassed 1019 patients with IS(male,n=313;female,n=706).Scoliotic curve severity assessed by Cobb's angle was categorized as mild(10°?Cobb's angle < 20°)or moderately severe(Cobb's angle of 20° or higher).Height(m)and weight(kg)were used to calculate BMI.Through correlation analysis and logistic regression analysis to assess the correlation of gender, age,BMI,Risser signs, scoliotic side, scoliotic position with the scoliotic curve severity of all subjects. Results The mean age of these 1019 IS patients was 13.0 ± 2.8 years. The mean height and weight of these IS patients were 155.1±13.7 centimeters and 45.0 ± 11.8 kg,respectively. As to the Cobb's angle, the mean value of these IS patients was 17.9±9.4° and the average BMI of these IS patients was 18.4±2.9 kg/m2.The average Risser of these IS patients was 2.0 ± 1.8.Among these patients,243(23.8%)patients were under weight,653(64.1%)patients were healthy weight, and 123(12.1%)patients were overweight.Female(p=0.000,OR 1.948;95%CI,1.372-2.764),scoliotic side of right(p=0.008,OR 1.572;95%CI,1.124-2.198),higher Risser(p=0.009,OR 1.19;95%CI,1.044-1.357)were positively correlated with scoliosis severity among these IS patients.Compared with scoliotic position of thoracic, scoliotic position of lumbar was negatively correlated with scoliosis severity among these IS patients(p=0.000,OR 0.239;95%CI,0.155-0.368).Conclusion Among patients newly diagnosed with IS patients, scoliotic curve severity is positively associated with females, scoliotic side of right, andhigher Risser signs. To avoid delayed detection and treatment of these patients, the screening positive standard should be broadened moderately among females and higher Risser signs patients in the idiopathic scoliosis screening program.
