Objective:To explore the correlation between trace element Se and idiopathic scoliosis, provide dietary guidance of selenium supplementation for scoliotic patients withincipient spine deformities and adolescents, then observe the rise and development ofthe disease in order to provide the basis for the etiology and prevention of idiopathicscoliosis. Methods:A total of90patients with idiopathic scoliosis in out-patient department from theSecond Hospital of Shanxi Medical University were examined and were divided intothree groups according to the Cobb Angle:35mild cases(20°~40°),30moderatecases(40°~60°)and25severe cases(≥60°).30volunteers of the same gender、agewere recruited from high incidence areas. With the informed consent of the researchobjects, collecting venous blood and making it into blood samples. Fluorescencemethod was adopted to determine the blood selenium content, a case-control study toresearch the difference in selenium content between healthy adolescents andidiopathic scoliotic patients, healthy adolescents and three different levels of patientsas well as within the three groups. Drawing up a selenium supplementation planaccording to Chinese Dietary Reference Intakes and selenium content of food inShanXi area. All data were processed by SPSS17.0,t-test、one-factor ANOVA were conducedto observe the changes of trace element Se in idiopathic scoliotic patients. Results:(1) General situation: A total of90adolescent idiopathic scoliotic patients wereexamined, female, with a mean age of (14.39±2.43) years.30healthy adolescents, female, with a mean age of (14.7±2.42) years were recruited, there was no statisticaldifference in age between the two groups(P>0.05).(2) The results of the study showed:In comparison with the control group(63.53±19.08ug/L), selenium content in idiopathic scoliotic patients(34.56±15.54ug/L) was significantly decreased(P<0.01). The content of selenium inmild, moderate and severe patients respectively is (40.57±14.77ug/L),(37.58±14.39ug/L),(22.51±10.97ug/L), selenium content in severe group issignificantly lower than the mild and moderate groups(P<0.01), but there is nostatistical difference between the two groups(P>0.05).Conclusions:(1) Selenium content in idiopathic scoliotic patients was decreased, and with theseverity of idiopathic scoliosis progressing, selenium deficiency became increasinglyprominent, there was a correlation between them.(2) Provide dietary guidance of selenium supplementation for idiopathicscoliotic patients and adolescents in order to observe the rise and development of thedisease.
