BACKGROUND:Soft tissue sarcomas(STSs)are a rare group of malignant tumors.Currently, the treatment is complicated and prognostic factors are still controversial. The aim of this study is to analyze the prognostic factors, outcomes, and clinic characteristics of STS by retrospective analysis of localized STS in 139 chinese adults.METHODS:This retrospective study was conducted with.139 adult patients who were diagnosed with STS based on pathological evidence and were treated in Affiliated Tumor Hospital of Guangxi Medical University.between January 2003 and December2013.Using descriptive statistical methods to depict and classify the characteristics.Kaplan-Meier method estimated the local recurrence-free survival(LRFS),distant metastasis-free survival(DMFS),and overall survival(OS).The Cox proportional hazards model was used for univariate and multivariate analyses, determining the prognostic factors for LRFS,DMFS,and OS.RESULTS:The median age of 139 patients(64 women and 75 men)was 46 years(range:18-79 years).Fibrosarcoma(22.3%)was the most common subtypes, followed by malignant fibrous histiotoma(15.1%)and synovial sarcoma, leiomyosarcoma and liposarcoma(13.7%each).Median follow-up duration was 28.9 months.Local recurrence happened to 68 patients and distant metastasis occurred in 57 patients.38 patients died of tumor. The LRFS rates at 1,3,and 5 years were 71.8%,48.9%,and 33.2%,the DMFS rates at 1,3,and 5 years were 74.2%,66.5%,and 35.2%,and the OS rates at 1,3,and 5 years were 92.7%,75.1%,and 61.8%,respectively.The P-value<0.05 of factors in univariate analysis as follow:age, primary tumor size, primary tumor depth, local nodal metastasis, histological grade, surgical margin and adjuvant radiotherapy. In multivariate analysis, nodal metastasis, deep tumor, and adjuvant radiotherapy were independent prognostic factors for OS(P<0.05),while histological grade, positive surgical margin, adjuvant radiotherapy, nodal metastasis, tumor size, and hitological type were independent prognostic factors for LRFS(P<0.05).The significant prognostic factors of DMFS as follow:histological grade, positive surgical margin, adjuvant radiotherapy, nodal metastasis, tumor depth, and hitological type(P<0.05).CONCLUSIONS:Several factors are independently associated with LRFS,DMFS,and OS,which help in selecting at-risk patients.Negative surgical margin could prolong the LRFS and DMFS.
