With the rapid development of we-media,especially we-media-based video platform, the public and others could use this type of media to release a variety of advertising in order to expand its influence and, therefore, gain "Internet traffic" for commercial or non-commercial activities.Videos based on wildlife, captive animals and domesticated animals are blooming and capturing attentions in we-media platform. There are also official IDs created by zoos and rescue centers. All of these could offer great resources for or way to natural education and scientific education However, there are also IDs or released videos that could have unclear or even misleading effects, such as feeding, teasing and even maltreating wildlife and captive animals. As the closest relatives of human beings in the evolutionary perspective,non-human primates(NHP)easily attract the public attention, but most of which are listed as vulnerable, endangered or even critical endangered. Therefore,it is urgent to assess the effects of self-media videos in conservation of non-human primatesFrom July 2018 to October 2019,a survey of NHP videos based on we-media video platform,Huoshan Xiaoshipin(Douyin Huoshanban)app, was conducted to assess the effect of self-media videos in conservation of non-human primates.Ad libitum sampling and content analysis were adopted to screen NHP videos, identify the species classification and the filming location. The social impact, species diversity, hot species and filming locations of the screened IDs releasing or sharing NHP videos were analyzed. Then the contents of the screened videos of rhesus macaques(Macaca mulatta)were categorized and analyzed. Moreover, special cases of rhesus macaques were harvested and analyzed accordingly for showing how the videos could promote scientific education or mislead public. The main contents and findings are as follows:1.Analysis on we-media videos of non-human primatesFrom July 2018 to September 2019,a survey of NHP videos based on we-media video platform,Huoshan Xiaoshipin(Douyin Huoshanban)app, was performed to evaluate the impact of self-media videos in conservation of non-human primates.Ad libitum sampling was used to screen the IDs releasing or sharing NHP videos, and then the number of fans and the value of fire(Huoli)were compiled, and the species involved in the videos and the filming locations were identified. The main finding included:1)out of totally connected 1357 IDs,4.94%of them focused on release/share NHP videos, while 72.07%of them released/shared NHP videos less than 6;2)regression analysis showed that the correlation coefficients of the number of NHP videos, the number of fans and the value of fire were higher than those of the non-NHP videos, which suggested that the IDs releasing/sharing more NHP videos could have greater social impacts;3)in total 27 NHP species were identified, while the others could be assigned to the levels of genus or family, and the most abundant taxon was Macaca(939.64‰),especially the rhesus macaque accounting for 936.79‰;4)the hot filming locations of rhesus macaque were Qianlingshan Park in Guiyang,Guizhou Province(79.01%)and Wulongkou Scenic Area,Jiyuan,Henan Province(5.53%).2.Analysis on videos of rhesus macaque filmed in Qianlingshan Park and Wulongkou Scenic AreaFrom February 2019 to October 2019,content analysis was explored to categorize the videos based on its theme, and then the number of fans, the value of fire(Huoli),and the number of released/shared total and NHP videos were compiled from IDs focusing on Qianlingshan Park(QLS group)and Wulongkou Scenic Area(WLK group). Then the characteristics of these two locations releasing/sharing rhesus macaque videos were estimated. The main results included:1)both QLS(81.8%)and WLK(74.6%)groups showed high proportion in Monkeys theme(QLS 45.7%,WLK 47.6%)and Human+Monkey theme(QLS 36.1%,WLK 27.0%),and there was no significant difference in the proportion of the videos with the same theme between the two groups(all p>0.537);2)in QLS group the highest number of Like(736.9±64.7)and Share(41.0±9.4)were Monkeys theme and the highest number of Comment(46.0±3.9)was Human+Monkey theme, while in WLK group the highest number of Like(533.4±158.1),Share(10.4±4.9)and Comment(34.0±10.3)all were Others theme;3)the analysis of social impacts for videos of QLS group and WLK groups showed that, the video numbers of Monkeys theme in QLS group were significantly positively correlated with the number of fans and the value of fire(all p<0.05),while no significant correlation was detected in WLK group between the number of video of each theme and the number of fans and the value of fire(all p>0.05)3.Analysis on special cases of NHPs videosFrom July 2018 to November 2019,special cases of videos regarding rhesus macaque from 1357 screened IDs were noticed, especially the cases of 'Mirror test'and 'Mouth-feeding',in order to directly estimate the social impact of these NHP videos. The major finding included:1)a total of 36 'Mirror test' videos were screened(QLS 34,and WLK 2),and the number of human-induced videos(23)was slightly higher than that the number of self-dominant videos(11)(p=0.055)in QLS group;2)among 37 rhesus macaques involved in the 34 'Mirror test' videos in QLS group, all the individuals involved in self-dominant videos were immatures(12),while for the human-induced videos, the number of participated immatures(19)was significantly higher than that of adult female macaques(6)(p=0.015);3)the response to mirror of rhesus macaque in 'Mirror test' was biased to explore the front of the mirror rather than the back or others;4)'Mouth-feeding' videos were only filmed at Qianlingshan Park, and the involved macaques were adult females(3/82,3.7%)and immatures(79/82,96.3%),and the participants were adult men(46/82,56.1%)and adult women(36/82,43.9%);5)the dominant attitudes compiled from the comments on each of the‘Mouth-feeding'videos were neutral(77.65±1.78%),and there were even comments(1.95±0.38%)showing interest in mimicking this kind of behavior.Based on we-media video platform, the number of NHP videos, social impact, species diversity, hot species and locations, and special cases were analyzed of the screened IDs releasing/sharing NHP videos, and then the role of we-media platform in protection of non-human primates was investigated. The major finding showed that IDs releasing/sharing NHP videos attracted higher social attention, and there were videos that could mislead publics directly and indirectly. This study also suggested that the relevant administrative departments,we-media industry society and operators should join together to create a 'clean' and 'righteous' media space, and assist protection and management for wildlife.
